I know people who will blow smoke in their children's faces because they find the kids' facial expressions humorous.

WTF!?! that disgusts me on so many levels.

anyway, i think the pictures are good. however, im not in favor of outlawing cigarettes as that would just put it in the hands of criminals. if people want to smoke let them smoke, it's there body and so long as they know the risks it should be there choice. hell, i think meth should be legal. if you legalize meth then it can be made more safely and hopefully the users of meth will use it more responsibly. if people want to ingest rat poison becuase it get's them high then let them.

Those are pretty tame compared to the ones they've been putting on cigs in Australia for years and they haven't done jack over there. Smokers will smoke.

We have had pictures in the UK for ages now, some are pretty horrendous and some are just mildly annoying. Good job I don't smoke anymore :)

@Ish, it may not be clear from my post, but I'm actually closer to your view on legality. I was mostly pointing out the hypocrisy.

Problem with smoking and drug use is that it NEVER is kept private. You say if they want to ingest rat poison let them... I agree, problem is that they take it onto the streets, blow it in people's faces, smoke up a storm at bus stops where people like me want to be able to stand and breathe clean air.

I walk down the street here in Vancouver and try my best to dodge clouds of second hand smoke from smokers walking in front of me. I succeed most of the time, but I can't dodge it all. Your smoking impedes on me! And because of that, I hope they eventually do away with smokers. I have no sympathy for smokers when they get pushed out of restaurants or public buildings and forced to smoke in the rain.

As for pictures on the packages, they should make the whole package a terrible graphic. Want to kill smokers over time? Don't allow them to advertise their product.

:)

@Curt: i wasn't trying to contrast your post very much either :)

@Martyr2: yes, there are some inherit issues with legalization of many drugs and things like cigarettes that could effect the people around users. however legalization can come with restrictions. i think more restrictions should be placed on cigs to prevent second hand smoke. you shouldn't have to dodge smoke clouds and neither should i.

I am not a no-smoking nazi, but I personally do not like it, the smell makes me gag.

When I see these images I can't help but think of the dolphin trainer/executive analogy( possibly gleaned from this forum, there are so many) about if an executive was training a dolphin to jump through hoops he would yell " jump through the hoop " and then hit the dolphin each time it didn't do it (I think I butchered that pretty bad). As stated, smoking is an addiction, and putting pictures on the cartons is a wasted effort. If you made them unpleasant to smoke maybe that mint change things, like the stuff habitual nail hitters can get to coat their nails with(tastes like nail varnish remover smells like by the way) but no. All the pictures do is raise public awareness, they do not stop the addiction, and also as stated, the risk factor is what attracts young smokers " lol I'm so cool dodging lung cancer with each puff".

As a lifelong, card carrying member of the association of habitual nail biters, I can assure you, for the hardcore, dedicated gnawer, the unpleasant taste does not make you stop chewing your nails. You get used the new flavor and keep chomping on the mandibles friggin' fingers.

Also, we really should consider exactly what's going on here. People are talking about ways to regulate cigarettes without outright outlawing them, but what's the point of that? I mean, would you honestly support a government that could go to a company and say "you have to make your product taste like shit so nobody will buy it. We're not outlawing it, but we're forcing you to make it so bad that nobody will want it."

I certainly wouldn't. Either do something or don't. Man up and outlaw it, or get the hell out of the way and let them act like a business. Otherwise, it's just wrong for a government to be intervening so much in a specific few corporations.
