I'm trying to record the audio coming out of my speakers with no results. After much Googling I decided to see if any Audacity junkies could assist me in my quest for recording glory.

I'm on Windows 7 with Audacity 1.2.6.

I enabled "Stereo Mix" in Control Panel > Sound > Recording, and connected an auxiliary cable from my PC's mic jack to the line in (green to blue). When I go to Edit > Preferences > Audio I/O > Recording > Device in Audacity, that drop-down box is completely empty. I tried to take a screenshot but the box closed when I went to open the capture software, so this was the best I could do:


Any help? It works when I plug my guitar in.

Mic jack to Line In? What?! Did you just plug the sound card into the sound card?
Anyway, besides that, you may want to try unmuting everything in the control panel's "playback"
and don't loop the sound card to itself.

If your speakers are USB:
Can you see drop-downs in the "audio" tab that don't say anything about speakers?
If you can't find a recording device in "sounds and audio devices",
then try unplugging your USB speakers and
hooking up analog headphones to the back of your computer.
Why? Because the USB speakers may have pushed your sound card out of the system temporarily.

Thanks OHL064, but my speakers aren't USB. The problem has fixed itself, since I closed the program out of frustration. After playing video games for several hours, I returned and found the drop box behaving like it should, full of options.
