Up next in Social Networking

Posted 29 June 2011 - 06:31 AM

I came across a short article on Google+ today. I hadn't heard of it before.

I haven't formed much of an opinion about it as of yet... but what do you think? Could this site top FB? Any DICs included in the invite-only trial run?

I think until the Myspace > Facebook users discover this it will be better. Problem with all this social media is becoming nothing but a rejection/firing ground for employers.

Wasn't there a case not too long ago where a judge found social networking posts to be protected under free speech? Or am I thinking of something else?

Dammit. Now I'll have to Google this shit.

Googled it. Found it.

That might be the case but you are an at will employee.

So you are saying me being fired from my job January because I posted on my Facebook page that I was searching for a new job was unjust and I have a lawsuit? I will pursue that shit if that's the case.

So the quick and dirty answer: nobody knows what the fuck is legal.

I think it boils down to: unless in a contract you are an at will employee and can be fired for anything at anytime.

I'd probably make a Google+ account and use it for a while. Going to do the same with Diaspora. Hard to be a "social" network if none of my friends go on it though.

Everything is illegal. The entire point of any legal system in a 'free' society that is nonetheless a police state is to restrict everything, so that any action can be in some way deemed to be illegal and against the public good, either directly or indirectly. Since everybody currently believes in freedom, most of this stuff is just water under the bridge, and it only lands on people that are bad (or just annoying) enough for prosecutors to spend time and money on landing in jail using the little things. Even Al Capone got sent to prison for tax evasion: no mention of smuggling, murder, extortion, blackmail, and everything else.

Terry Pratchett put it pretty succinctly when he described the police liking it if '...everyone would just sit quietly at the kitchen table in their homes, with their hands where they could be easily seen... although in this case they would still probably be guilty of at least loitering.'

The anti-social stereotype extends even into the internet social networks. Interesting.

I was referring to all the "I need teh MySpace codez" and grandmas wanting to talk to little Timmy. As I recall the beginnings of Facebook it was primarily used by College students. Now my neighbors dog sends me friend requests and invites to play farmville.

One huge advantage I think this will have is it will be on Google's search engine homepage. Not sure about Youtube but it's a possibility. Getting exposure for this won't be Google's problem but keeping the users that actually sign up interested. From the looks of it, Free Video Chat and a new feature Huddle, it looks like something that will grow rather quickly.
As in surpassing Facebook, no time soon but it can happen.

It's possible to top Fb... Because of the new features... Fb needs to be adding new features rather than focusing on security
