What happens if the internet is closed for 1 year

Posted 04 July 2011 - 02:53 AM

There are 3 necessities that people need in order to live. Those are Food,Clothing and Shelter;but nowadays the internet seems to be included among those necessities.

So can you survive if the internet is closed for a year?

My business requires internet connectivity.

Customers find us via search engines & online advertising.
Viruses infect customers laptops & personal computers, as well as corporations computer networks.

I wouldn't survive 3 months.

In my country, the Internet is used mostly for emails only. So we can survive even for 2 years. We don't have that much business that do their work online.

I would go bonkers. During the day, I think about things and find myself running to the computer to Google it.

Hmm... there's actually a Buddhist doctrine that states the four necessities as: clothing, food, shelter and medicine. Medicine is a pretty good catchall and I guess we could place the Internet in that category.

Personally, if I had no internet I'd probably get a lot more reading done. I go camping on rare occasions with no power and zero contact with the outside world. It's actually kind of freeing. But that's just me.

If everyone lost the internet for an extended period of time, that's far more interesting. Major infrastructures would collapse. There would be a mad scramble to reestablish connection as global markets failed. Supply lines would be crippled and I really wouldn't want to be in any densely populated areas for it. Rioting wouldn't happen after day one of Internet black out, but after week one is would probably be a different story.

Yeah, it could get pretty damn biblical if you think about it. It's not the zombies we need fear, but the zombie bot nets... :P

You know, I think I'd be alright. Right now I spend a ridiculous amount of time online. Pretty much 25-50% of my workday and then some of my spare time as well. Either watching something online or playing online with various friends that live too far away to meet them IRL. But if the internet went "poof", I'd get over it. I'm old enough to remember the days when there was no internet so I guess I have an easier time going back than some of you youngsters.

Now, if I were the only one who was "jinxed" so I couldn't access the internet, I'd lose my job and then on delete cascade the aforementioned necessities of life: food and shelter. Clothing wouldn't be a problem, that would still be in pretty good condition by the time I starved to death.

Well, I would have to say that it would be life changing for the first week. I would have to find other means to pacify my craving for learning. Fortunately I am old enough to remember life without the internet and could probably find other things to do. The main problem is how everything seems to be connected nowadays. When I talk of life with no internet, I'm just looking at it from my Website Viewing point-of-view.
However, there are a lot of things that encompass the internet as part of their structure that would cause bigger problems. Like when you set up to do online bill payment and all of a sudden you can't, how long would it take you to get your payments sent out to everyone? For that matter, would they automatically revert your account back to paper billing? I really don't think there are any back-up plans for this kind of disruption.

Here's an even deeper thing to think about. Let's say all this happens and everyone starts using the postal system again to pass along business documents and such. I'm not so sure today's post office could get the man-power back up to handle the load in enough time to not cause major problems in business communications.

I've actually not used the internet for ANYTHING for an entire week. I found it to be awesome and gave me much more time to do things that mattered.

Well, I use the internet quite a bit so it'd definitely be fu*king annoying for the first 2 weeks or so as I would not be able to:
- go on DIC
- Look @ programming tutorials, msdn etc...
- game online
- blah blah etc...

I think individual people would cope but as others have mentioned think about the damage it would do to the international economy... :/ and social media amongst other things.
