Any guide for noob webmasters about solving possible legal issues

Posted 06 July 2011 - 08:48 PM

If I have a website; with a recipe on it, and someone makes the thing and feeds it to someone and they die?
Can I get sued? Can I get banned from Google AdSense?

How about if I tell someone to unscrew something, and they unscrew it and it breaks? LOL
Or if I tell someone that if they want to hallucinate they can try not sleeping for 4 days, and they get permanent mental damage? Can I get sued?

Are there any guides that tell me all I need to know about legal-ish stuff like this for websites?

Maybe you should taste-test your own recipes before posting them online...

@SurfingShark
I lol'd.

In any case he's right. Make sure all stuff that you post are tested. Unless you really want to poison someone.

Easy, go to lawyer. Also, don't post recipe's of how to make LCD... or any other poison for that matter, neither tell anyone to sleep with a plastic bag over his head.

Wording can go quite far. I mean is there a sticker on your new microwave that says "do not insert dogs/cats/babies etc into microwave" when you buy it? (guess it depends on what country you are in) but it would be better to safeguard yourself by means of "disclaimers" (thus go to a lawyer and inform yourself)

You should create a website that is nothing but 30 pages of disclaimers.

That would be cool a web page of disclaimers for people in need of disclaimers making dangerous goods and giving ill advice.

First and foremost you should seek legitimate legal counsel instead of a bunch of potentially retarded internet dwellers. Why would you seek legal advice from people who are not qualified to give it?

I think this guy is thinking about making some sort of anarchy site.

I couldn't really find anything other than this article on telling people how to kill themselves (any suicidal person could wander into your site and look for non-painful poisons).

illegal where?

Is that where the domain is physically located? Where the person resides? location of the reader?

I'm not a lawyer but it seems to me that the difference between posting a recipe and posting the phrase "hey, I've got a great idea: go kill yourself" is prolly about the same in terms of liability. Free speech is just that. Just because you suggested someone do something, they have to make the proactive choice to follow your advice and do it. If they did that then the preponderance of the liability is on themselves...for being stupid enough to take your advice.

That plus...recipes? Really? How could that be dangerous?

Ingredients:
1 cup melted butter
2 Tbsp sugar
3 lbs razor blades
1/4 cup baking powder
etc...

That kinda thing?

I like the one where the guy was freaking out saying his little sister did it and wasn't breathing. Plenty of lulz to be had. I was actually thinking of this troll specifically but couldn't remember the recipe.
