Just read an article about electric/hybrid vehicles and how the government wants to require them to make more noise because they are "too quiet" and are hurting pedestrians. The basic rules of "Stop, Look and Listen" apparently don't apply in the U.S. Regardless, here's the Linky.

My question, folks, is what sound should they make? Should they work like ringtones where the driver can pick their own sound? Should there be an iTunes department specifically for eco-friendly auto owners to purchase sappy love songs or the tunes of 80s hair bands for their cars to play as they sputter down the street?

I think they should make that little, high-pitched, futuristic whizzing sound like the hover cars from the Jetsons.

They should sound like an poorly aged 1995 Nissan Pathfinder that leaks oil and has an EGR valve problem.

How about if people that walk in the road & don't respect their life enough to watch out for objects that can kill them, then eff'em.

I hardly think it is a complete issue of "stupid Americans" and pedestrian blame. I can look both ways and keep vigilante, but there's bound to be that ass hat the flies around a corner, exits from a parking lot, comes out of no where behind me, or pulls through a parking space and tries to run me over.

The road is a dangerous place. I learned this when I was like 5. I stick to my opinion.

Not to mention how many people I see strolling through the road with their face burred in their busy lives of the cellular telephone. Their facebook/twitter update is just too important for the to stop, take two (potentially life saving) seconds, think, make a proper judgement call, & continue on with their busy self.

To be fair, the same cell phone argument can be used for drivers as well. If I didn't see so many people using their phones while driving, running red lights, etc., I would tend to agree with you about the stupid pedestrians. It really can go either way. Better to evaluate on a case-by-case basis to determine who is at fault, imo.

Yup, but that's not everyone. As you already stated those folks won't hear jack with today's "noisy" cars to the protective measure is not for them. It's for those of us who are actively aware, but want some heads up from the asshat drivers.

I'm guessing the reason I haven't noticed such a huge problem is because I only have to pass two stoplights on my 30 mile commute...

Oh, I like the idea of the drivers picking MP3's. And allow them to set the volume. But only if I am the only one allowed to do it.

Of course - how is that different from just driving with your windows open and your stereo on?

Or, I would go with
Alf: Hey, Willie! Want to hear the most annoying sound in the world? (sadly, I lost my MP3 of this, or I would post it. The dumb and dumber doesn't do it justice).

On a side note - I think it's plain silly to require this. Up there iwth stupid laws.
