In December I'll start looking at internships for next summer. So purely out of curiosity, here are some questions for anyone who feels like answering them:

• How old were you when you got your first programming internship/job?
  
• How much programming experience did you have at that point? (i.e. 3 years)
  
• What was your language of choice at the time?

Internship - I was practicing Javascript and Java.
Job - would have preferred C# but since I'm starting again with a clean slate I now prefer Java.

20 years old, right after my junior year of college.

Just 3 years of university. I only started programming when I started my university degree.

What was your language of choice at the time?

C#

How old: I was 19 when I got my current job
How much programming experience: To be honest, back then I did not have a lot of programming experience, as I was in my second year of study. I think I just got one year of (basic) programming skills in JAVA.
What language: Well, JAVA was my "first" choice (as we did not have a choice at the university), but I also started programming in C# back then. In addition, I already had some experience in Maple and Matlab, but I do not count them as a programming language (as I was using Maple for on the go calculations and Matlab for scripting)

My language of choice is C#, which is a big reason why I chose this internship I'm doing now.

  I'd been designing websites and obsessively using computers from the age of 11 but I'd only really been programming for just over a year. As for work experience I had absolutely none in the field of IT, my only previous employment at that date was working as a pool lifeguard and occasionally fixing people's PCs and babysitting.

  At the time I was learning C++ and it probably still is my favourite language, the job however is mainly web development so I am brushing up on my HTML, CSS, Javascript, PHP and MySQL as I speak!

You know, I suppose I really should jump into this list. I've been working with a computer science professor for the past few weeks. I've been programming robots and I've been getting paid for it, so I guess this counts as my first programming job?

Anyway --

How old were you when you got your first programming internship/job? 18
How much programming experience did you have at that point? I had already had a semester of Java before I started and I'd ventured into Python and other various languages/domains, but nothing extravagant.
What was your language of choice at the time? When I started I was partial to Python, but the job used a lot of Java.

I'm currently doing a paid internship right now. I started early this year and I was and am 17. I had around 4-5 years of programming experience and absolutely no work experience. My language of choice is Clojure and that's what I work with at the company.

My first programming job was interesting. I was 23, and my mom's coworker's husband offered me a job. He was VP of IT at a relatively small company. I told him I didn't have much experience, and he said we could try a few things to find what I fit in with.

I had a few years of C++ from high school (not very deep), and about two years of Java from college (that I've never finished). I had read an ASP.NET 1.1 book, with VB.NET as the codebehind.

I started working in a cubicle with another guy, going over RPG code on an IBM terminal. Not a terminal emulator, an actual mainframe dumb terminal.

Another issue came up, and I quickly wrote a web application to handle it. Immediately they switched my job description over to web programming, moved me into my own cubicle, and gave me a decent salary.

For the next project, I used C#, and ever since then, I've loved it.
