installing a rails server on a mac costs $99/yr due to xcode!

Posted 07 August 2011 - 03:00 PM

I'm trying to get rvm onto a designer's mac, and that worked, but I run

$  rvm install 1.9.2

And I get a shiton of errors. The logs are telling me I don't have a suitable C compiler installed. There's gotta be some way to do apt-get gcc or something, isn't there? How else could there be so many ppl choosing mac to develop on?

Have you installed Xcode?

If he's on Lion, you need to install it (for free) from the App Store. If he's using something older, you'll have to install an older version by signing up for the developer center.

The designer just has mac osx (not even snow I guess??). I grabbed a copy of xcode from the alternative sources (on principal) but since this activity is non educational, I don't want to use that copy (on principal of course).

So it looks like my options are
-Get mac Lion ($30, not bad I guess)
-Get a dev license ($99, ugghhh...)
-Give them a spare antiquity machine running at 500mhz with nix on it

The designer isn't very computer savvy so I'm going to put this on hold for a while and just have her send me the .bmp mockups and I'll do the html parts until I have the web app somewhat arranged properly. Then maybe I'll suggest the $30 upgrade, even though directing someone to pay to use an open source product isn't something I'm 100% comfortable with yet.

Thanks again for the tip about Lion, Neoracle.

I was almost certain there's an education/research license for XCode. I used XCode on snow leapord for my C programming class before I signed up as an iOS developer in April.

Xcode came on my OS X 10.6 install CD that came with the computer. Just pop it in and open the "Optional Software" folder.

Thanks, I'll have to snoop around for the designers install CD next time I'm in town meeting with them.
