Unity Doesn't Recognize Maya Object Colors and Textures Problem

Hello

I am using FBX export in Maya 3D to integreate them in Unity. However when we do although the raw image is perfectly seeable/moveable/scaleable etc. the colors are missing.

I checked the internet for maybe i was using the wrong kind of export however, everyone reccomends fbx format. We can color the 3D image in unity, however a texture drawen in PS is again failing. We tried a waffle like texture so we can how unity applies the squares to image yet again only a line is seeable. When we play with size of texture nothing changes.

I would like to get advise on two things.

1- Is the problem from Maya or Unity or both?
2- A source that can help us in order to fix to problem.

This is more of an art question than anything else, but I would think that you are using the wrong color format. You need to refer to the Maya docs to check this.

Also if you can, post an image of the problem. :)

My collegue says that, we can't attach textures to materials. Maybe that should help identifying the problem :whatsthat:

Ah and by the way i use simple maya 3d paint tool

Trouble is I can't tell you precisely why this is happening, I'm not even certain if there is a bug with Unity causing this. I would suggest you raise it with their support.

It certainly does look like the texture are not being applied, but I doubt it's because they can't, it 's just that they aren't.

Do you not have to apply the textures separately in unity? You do in most engines.

I'm assuming the instructions have been followed. It appears to be that as long as everything is in the right folders with the right import settings then it should be fine. :)

Aww didn't see that one! Thank for that one too! Maybe we're missing something so i'll check step by step to be sure

This is my first game project, my more experienced collegues suggest previously they did everything in Maya, so I guess you can do both.

For those who may confront this issue later, i'd like to add what I found out.


Regarding unity forums, turns out it not an uncommon problem. And there is not really a reliable solution to it. FBX format guide given in unity site doesn't help at all, as it is the default FBX format Maya already exports. If you don't paint but just texture models in Maya, and later import textures in Unity as well, that doesn't %100 work too.

So the most realiable yet very time-taking solution is, making the models and the textures alone, then join them in unity. So far it worked for us. If I ever come up with a more clever solution I'll write that down as well.
