48 hour game development competition this weekend!

Posted 17 August 2011 - 04:45 AM

As some here may know, every couple of months, a 48 hour game developing competition occurs where the theme is voted on and isn't given until the start of the competition.

This competition is called "Ludum Dare" (see here www.ludumdare.com) and begins on friday 19th.

This will be my 3rd one, and I will most likely use XNA for it.

My question is, who else is doing it?
Have any of you competed before? If so, have you got any screenshots\footage of your past entries?

Odd- no I have never participated. Do you walk in with a shell of an engine or is that something you need to build from scratch in those two days?

What's your strategy for staying alert and focused - don't sleep? Cat naps?

You have to create everything from scratch and can only use assets you have created yourself.
What you use is up to you, a lot of people in the last one used C++ and game maker.
This time around it seems that the majority is now XNA.

And you don't walk in, you upload your entry and it gets rated by other participants.
Then after two weeks you see where you place, but that part I don't care about, I use this as a benchmark of how much better I've gotten since the last one.

The cool thing about it is that the community is very social and post blogs on the website showing their progress or a timelapse of their game.

This will actually be my first time in a LD. Not sure exactly what I'll use just yet.

Been watching him for a little while... His standards are a bit skew. Uses "i" and "xx" and "yy" as variable names, often. Lol.

Yeah his naming practices are absolutely awful, it's as if he is trying to obfuscate while writing.

No, had a lot of other things to do this past weekend. I might give one a try some time though. Keep us posted with the latest news about these. It would interesting to participate in one of these.
