POPULAR

It is time for the forth XNA game programming challenge. This challenge will be six weeks in duration.

Challenge:
Tower defence

Description:
This challenge I hope also allows for a lot of freedom. You are to build a tower defence game. If you are unsure of what a tower defence game is you can check out this web site for inspiration.

Requirements:
Other than following the theme of a tower defense game I would like to see three other requirements. One is that you can upgrade towers. The second is that you implement a menu system. The last is that you can save high scores.

Scoring:
I will not take points off of a project for artwork or lack thereof. This is a programming challenge, not an art challenge. I’m looking for game play over assets. A game that is fun to play and doesn't have the best art will score higher than a game that doesn't play well and looks good. You’ve completed the challenge and have a chance to win Gold, Silver or Bronze.

There will be a prize for this challenges. I'm offering a $25 prize to the winner. You will also gain bragging rights and a review of your game.

Gather your resources and begin writing your games! You have until October 4th to get your submission in. Anything submitted after October 4th will not be accepted. You do not have submit your source code, but you can if you wish.

If you have any difficulties with your entry you are free to ask for help in the XNA forum here at Dream.In.Code.

Best of luck in this game programming adventure!

For a second I thought it was to be done in Forth. Tower defense is awesome, I'd love to play some creative new versions.

Another amazing challenge, Six. This time you've even managed to get a prize for the winner! Hopefully this challenge has more than one entry. Get creative here people, this challenge has been left wide open and begging for innovation in the tower defense genre.

I've been waiting for the "right time" (whatever that is?!) to start writing my Tower Defence iteration for a long time, this is a good enough reason to start now.

Can I just ask, does this have to be for Windows? Or can we branch off to Windows Phone?

Also, if we do multiplayer, do we get bonus points?

Also, if we're allowed to develop for Win + WP7, do we get bonus points for doing cross-platform multiplayer?

If the answer is yes to all of the above, this could be an amazing challenge.

I would guess that adding networking would be an exstenive and long winded process that would detract from the rest of the development, I would just stick to the basic Human vs AI or Local Player 1 vs Local Player 2.

Not particularly, I like to consider my expertise to be in networking when it comes to C# development :)

Of course, I'm not stating this to be a requirement, just wondering if it's allowed. The question is primarily regarding the platform of development, as I was planning on developing a WP7 tower defense anyway.

Anything is allowed as long as you follow the main requirements of the challenge listed above. As for networking I would suggest you try to use as much XNA fuctionality as you can for the Windows platform.

It can be for Windows, XBOX 360 or WP7. I can run on all three platforms. You will get bonus points for implementing any features above the basic requirements that are implemented. For scoring I will be using the following formula:

  • 40 points programming skill
  • 40 points game design
  • 10 points assets
  • 10 points judge's bonus

So implementing multiplayer will definitely boost your programming skill mark and impress the judges and get points in judges' bonus. I'm going to talk with a couple people and see about getting a second judge. Scores will be averaged together.

*edit*
I found the second judge. I've asked Kilorn to be the second judge and he's accepted.

Personally, I'd like to see each entry written from scratch in XNA, rather than using a game engine, whether that game engine is for XNA or just C#, but this is SixOfEleven's challenge and I'll let him make the rules.

Confusion in that first post. Is the game cut off the 4th or 9th?

I might give this a try this time round, I've got a couple of ideas on how to proceed.

I just wish I had more time to devote to these challenges rather than just a guest judge. I'd love to actually enter them, but there's just too much going on at the moment.
