Pre-career Coding Slumps - Burned Out Before You Begin?

Posted 22 August 2011 - 11:20 AM

I'm not even done with college and I'm starting to burn out. I guess my problem is not having a client. Professors are the closest I get. Don't get me wrong school work is a great teaser. They reinforce what we learn in class, and in the next class we reinforce what we learned from coding. But I feel.. "depressed". Not with life in general but just with coding. Advice anybody?

If you're looking for things to do to keep you interested, sign up to the various freelance websites out there and start bidding on projects. There are tons of projects for every language and technology with chances for you to actually make some money. Otherwise, choose something other than programming to do.

you tried something fucking dumb.

'twas sarcasm.
The only other careers I've honestly considered is teaching math or being a doctor.

Do you (or anybody lurking) have experience with such a site?

In the words of the immortal Denis Leary: "Happiness comes in small doses folks. It's a cigarette butt, or a chocolate chip cookie or a five second orgasm. You come, you smoke the butt you eat the cookie you go to sleep wake up and go back to fucking work the next morning, THAT'S IT! End of fucking list!"

I've put in a couple bids on some small projects on freelancer.com, but haven't won any of the bids, so I can't speak from experience as far as how reliable the sites are, but there are a ton of them out there.

Do something that is not programming related. Pick up bouldering, sculpt, fix up old cars, or even ride the snake. If you are burned out then get a new hobby that isn't programming. It's not like you have to do this shit 24/7.

Freelancing is how I got started. I used sites like rentacoder, getacoder, guru, elance, odesk and of course had a personal website that I used to put a portfolio and stuff up. Today it's hard getting jobs on there since there are well established providers on most of them but it's worth a shot. I started out doing programming with .NET and now do a lot of it support and network stuff some on odesk and elance so there are broad ranges of projects on each site.
