Simple math problem, trying to help out my little brother.

Posted 25 August 2011 - 09:12 AM

The problem as it is verbatim:

"Calculate the average speed a runnr has during a marathon. The time data is entered via keyboard, expressed in minutes. The result should be in Kilometers per hour."

I'm assuming the distance is measured in Meters. Ok.

How would I convert meters per second, to kilometers per hour? Paging, Macosxnerd. :P

The conversion is 1 m/sec == 3.6 km/hr.

By the way, not sure if you're aware, but the Google calculator is tremendous for conversions. I used it a ton in my two years of chemistry. Type in unita to unitb and it should show you the conversion.

Hope this helps some! :)

(1 m / 1 s) x (3600 s / 1 hr) x (1 km / 1000 m) = profit (or as mac said, 3.6 km/hr)

How many Meters in a Kilometre?
1 Km = 1000 m
How many Minutes in a Hour?
1 Hr = 60 mins
How many Seconds in a Minute?
1 Min = 60 Secs
How many Seconds in a Hour?
60 Secs * 60 Mins = 3600 Secs
So how m/s is equalivent to 1Km / s?
1 M/Sec == 1000m / 3600 Secs == 1m/3.6secs

Best explanation here! Notice how the unneeded units of measure cancel out to give the final km/hr.
