SSD writing.

Posted 26 August 2011 - 05:46 PM

I was wondering if it was possible to write to multiple places on a SSD (2 different files) at the same time I was wondering this because a HHD drive could only write at one place because of the need for a needle. In that case if a HDD had 2 needles could it do 2 read/write applications?

I believe its possible with an SSD as it doesn't have a read/write head to have to move between sectors.
I hope this helps.

SSD's have the ability to do parallel reads and writes but usually they only do sequential operations.

SSDs do utilize multiple write/read operations at once. The problem is that when you read back data, it has to be sequential to the SATA controller, so it isn't as much of a speed gain as one might think. Also, there is a limit to the ability of the SSD controllers abilities.

HDDs don't use needles - they use a magnetic head. And a second head isn't really viable. It would involve completely changing the form factor of the disk, the interface, brand new controllers and a rather ridiculous amount of overhead to deal with data reads and writes from two completely different places. HDDs currently (if they have more than one platter) do use a read head for each platter, but they do not move independently and don't act the same way as you are suggesting.
