I know somebody that uses iPage and I can say that it's slow as crap, but legit.

What is it that you need hosting for? I can always provide something better if you wish.

Basically soon i will need hosting fow a website (duh not sure why i typed that) That will display a leader board and also host the Mysql database for it, which i have no clue how large i will need it because it depends how popular my game plugin gets and how many people install it on their servers and then how many people play those servers. I then plan on adding more features to the website later on like ability to log on and view your profile and things like that. Maybe support forums also, that probably wont have many posts in.

heard of zyma.com? It is even cheaper and is based in the UK. Haven't tried yet myself but have been considering. Really not much or any bad feedback on the net that I've found yet.

Who knows.

Anyway hosting providers can and do do this by lowering quality of service.

It's simple, really, "unlimited" is of course not unlimited, generally restricted by an SLA / FUP, which can, as we see with mobile networks who offer "unlimited bandwidth" be extremely low (in the case of mobiles, anything between 25MB/Day -> 2GB/Mo). They're not lying, it is "unlimited" in a fake way that is that they let you use unlimited amounts of data as long as it's not too much, if you know what I mean.

That's just one thing, the next is the price and quality of service. Servers can be purchased for, let's say, £1000 for a high(ish) spec machine. After this initial investment, you can colocate this within a datacenter (including bandwidth) for approximately £30-50/Mo to get adequate power and bandwidth.

So let's say on average it costs £480/year to host a single server. You only need to stick 100 clients on that server for it to break even (excluding initial costs). Let's say 300 clients per server, and after a year, every cost is covered. Now of course these are extreme examples, you will find that most of these "web hosts" that offer this crap are using dedicated servers for around £50/mo with "average" hardware, which means they'd need to make £600/year to break even, which is say, 150 clients per server.

The most I have seen on a cPanel-based server is around 450 clients. It was slow as crap, but hey how can the customers complain, it was available for the 99.9% guarantee, and everything was legally in order - they were paying peanuts for it.

Anyway what I'm trying to say is that all of these companies oversell and offer crap service, every single one of them. Hell even big companies offering corporate hosting for £30/mo will still stick around 30-50 sites on each of their servers.

EDIT: Zyma in itself is an extreme example as it's only £5/year, but talking from normal hosts which will do it for £20/year or say £3/mo the same is evident and it's even clearer to see why it's possible.
