Who is your hero and why?
Posted 13 September 2011 - 06:52 AM
Simple. Who's your hero and why? What does (or did) he or she do to become your hero?
Anything goes.

POPULAR
My dad because he was the most honorable and selfless man I knew. He would do anything for his family. He and my mom divorced in 1989 and even though there was animosity between them he still volunteered to live with and take care of my mom's sister (who was bedridden) from 2004 to her passing in 2008. And when I say "take care of" I mean it. She couldn't get out of bed so he had to cook for her, clean her, and help her relieve herself. There was absolutely nothing in it for him. He and my mom's sister hated each other when he was married to my mom. Nobody would have thought lesser of him for declining to help because he was retired after busting his a** for 50+ years. But he did it because the alternative was for her to go into a home because my mom could not afford a nurse and could not afford to stop working to help her.
One other thing. Even when the chemotherapy made him so sick that he couldn't even keep water down, he refused to do any illegal substances. I can't say much about this for obvious reasons, but let's just say that there were chances for him to get some relief and even a doctor told him (off the record) he should do it, but he stood by his convictions. Even though I disagree with his decision to abstain, I respect him for it.
He's my hero because I aspire to be that honorable in my convictions and selflessness for my family.

We're not here to judge - only express the qualities worth admiration.

I do.... and I completely forgot to post mine. Silly me.
My hero is also my father, but for other reasons. nothing nearly as cool as Programmist's, but still good.
Years ago, I was adopted by the family that raised me. I've always known. It was never a secret. But as I grew into a man, I had doubts about who I was and what I could be - having not known who I come from or who I truly am.
My father taught me the value of hard work, family, and friends. He taught me that I have the potential to do so much more than I ever imagined - and most importantly, I am who I want to become. For that, I am proud to say he is my hero.

It's not original but my hero is my father. I think that if you're a guy (especially if you have a family) you look at what you do for you and yours today and realize how blithely unaware you were when your Dad was doing that for you when you were younger.
Anyway, rather than belabor a point, I'll link to a post I dropped on my blog for Fathers' Day last year as it pretty much says it all from my perspective.
