Windows 8 Developers Preview

Post icon  Posted 14 September 2011 - 05:56 AM

Microsoft has release the developers preview for Windows 8, including:
  • 64-bit Windows Developer Preview
  • Windows SDK for Metro style apps
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 11 Express for Windows Developer Preview
  • Microsoft Expression Blend 5 Developer Preview
  • 28 Metro style apps including the BUILD Conference app

It's available here. I've not had a chance to look at it yet, but it's downloading :)

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 3

I'm wondering if this'll install properly to a VM.

According to @kellabyte, the installation chokes on VMWare, but works fine on VirtualBox.

I'm downloading the .ISO today because I heard it has Visual Studio 2011. :D

I got a link from my boss about installing to a VHD and booting from it:

http://www.hanselman...alHardDisk.aspx

We'll see how that works.

I meant to download it last night, but I forgot. I'll try again tonight. I am so excited to see Win8!

I downloaded it and these were my first impressions:
- hate the new start menu
- however, refreshing interface
- smooth
- quick and easy transition to traditional desktop
- a bit of a hassle locating specific apps

People are going to lose their shit over the control panel changes. If it were up to some people, we'd have the Windows 2000 control panel. Still.

I have to say, I like the looks of Explorer and Task Manager.

I believe you can revert back to the old start menu still by changing a registry key.

If you run IE from Metro, it actually looks completely different. Takes up the full screen and the URL bar hides at the bottom.

Actually, Microsoft made the comment that you won't be able to use Windows 8 without Metro. I'm not sure how much this will stay this way between now and actual release.

Apparently you can change the value of RPEnabled from "1" to a "0" in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer

Although from what I've heard this completely disables Metro and so practically defeats the whole point of this release.

Good, Metro sucks. I'll try it out.

Update: It worked after a restart. Already feel better, now that I'm not constantly bouncing between Metro and the desktop.
