Please can i get feedback on my website design?

Posted 14 September 2011 - 11:17 AM

I have a kinda big project I'm working on, it's mainly focused on the functionality and it will have a template system implemented and you will be expected to use your own templates, however i can't have a crappy default one, so please rip the living daylights out of it (without being harsh ;) ), i know my design skills need A LOT of work but here we go:

Problems:
White bars on the sides even though the blue header stretches..
Hire us button doesn't have a right border.
The button borders don't line up at the top or bottom.
The CB logo looks dingy and dark.
General font is boring.
The 'latest jobs' blue is a bit bright for this page.
The over all color scheme is boring.
The 'News' and 'About Us' needs more definition.
Over all very vanilla in the layout. Two columns and a third for some "latest comments".

Of course you mentioned the gist of your project is functionality so that is hard to convey in an image.

yeh the white bars represents the background of the browser and the header and foot will go to the edges of the browser

I didn't want it to have a right boarder, just as the Home doesn't have a left boarder they were to just separate them but if you think it would look better if i added a right boarder i'll do so.

I didn't see that, easy fix it's still in psd format

CB is a placeholder and i made it in literally 5 seconds to represent the logo space, this whole thing is a personal project aimed at freelancers and small businesses, so everything is expected to be customized theoretically (although this is mainly for practice, unless i like the final results i guess.)

Font it something i don't get, I mean I thought i had to have crappy fonts like helvetica and arial and stuff like that, that will be on every machine? Font's is sort of a grey area in my knowledge.

Ok

I wanted the colour scheme to be clean and plain, with cold colours, it does that but ok.

Yes i see they do, thanks

Yup @vanilla@ is what i went for, as I said i was going for a plain simple default layout, that people would definitely change, I just wanted it to look clean and presentable.

Thanks for the critique it helped a lot :) I'll take it on board :)

Easiest way for font pleasers:
font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Sans-Serif;

Try continuing the gradient from the top - down to the bottom.

Normally, I keep my headers within some sort of container.

However, there are times when you can get away with spanning the header across a page:
