Bulldozer; the word?

Posted 15 September 2011 - 01:02 PM

So the bug has gotten me again to upgrade my PC. It was running damn Windows8 experimental version in VirtualBox and it was complaining about the RAM usage. I looked at RAM prices and figured I could get another 2gb stick or so, but then why not just start looking at new parts?!

Old bits:

Quote

AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 3.1GHz
Biostar A770E
NVIDIA 9800 GT EE
4 gb ddr2

My theory was:
2x4gb DDR3,
PhenomII 955 (maybe 970),
and a MSI870-g45 board.

All for about $223. Use the old videocard (because it is nothing but speed) and call it a day.

Does anyone know any good word on Bulldozer? I know they had their little competition/advertisement and nothing since.. if the word is in a few weeks I'll hold off. If it's more than that I probably won't.

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

From what I hear it is still for servers use, in other words big $$.

As for your new system, the 955 is a great quad core. I don't know what you plan to use the machine for so I can't tell if it is overkill.

Well let's see.. Code mostly.. virtual machines (that's where it started with the RAM complaint on my current system)... the only videogames I am looking for are skyrim and the last FalloutNV DLC.... digital drawing.. so this might be more of an exercise of just tossing money down a drain because I am feeling puckish.

From what i hear and have seen some benchmarks over at http://www.tomshardware.com that the AMD "bulldozer" the FX series is equivalent of the Intel i7 series. I don't have personal experience with the AMD FX yet but hoping I soon will, I cant give any personal info but I believe the benchmarks.

Eight core processor does sound like a work horse. You can compare what you're getting for you buck on PassMark. The new eight core AMD FX-8120 is up high in the rankings and comes in at about $210US. The 8GB DDR3 would work great. I do a lot virtually and the 8GB does a good job handling virtual machines. Can have several machines going and not notice it, including a Windows 8 Developer Preview set to 2GB RAM.

Personally, I'm looking to upgrade from a Phenom II X4 920 to a Phenom II X6 1055T or 1065T after the holidays. I'd like the 1065T but having a problem finding one. The 1055T will do if I can't find a 1065T.
