How is a page different when logged in, from user to user? Like if I have a web page that lets you set preferences by user, how are these preferences saved and set to that specific user? Would I use $_SESSION, session_start(), etc? and how might I go about setting this login area up?

Sorry I shouldve clarified a little more
. I meant to ask, along with that, if using the global variables to retain that information.. you would basically have your layout in html and then the $_SESSION variables would fill in the information thats "calling" for it in the php on the page? Am I understanding this correctly?
