Use various image resolutions for different internet speeds

Posted 26 September 2011 - 05:03 PM

I live in Alaska and we have some of the worse internet speeds in the nation. The majority of our demographic resides in Anchorage (decent speeds) and the Mat-Su but some of them will rely in the villages where they get close to dial up type speeds. I was wondering if you guys know of any decent solution for using various image file types.

For Example:

Slow internet speed: use 30KB file
Medium internet speed: use 75KB file
Fast internet speed: use 115KB file

Thanks for your help.

There's not real easy way to determine someone's connection speed.. outside of waiting for a full data package test before the load of each site. How about just optimizing ALL your images instead? I mean adobe 'image ready' that came with my photoshop can crank an 20k image down to 2k.. at least I remember it doing that.

I already do optimize them, but by optimizing a large image down from say 150K to 20 - 40K the quality goes to crap. So I want to be able for decent end users to be able to see good quality images and the lower end ones see the crappier ones. I figured I would have to do a download in order to get the time, but it would only be on the first visit as I would set a cookie after that, I was just wondering if there was already a solution that someone was aware of. I wonder if speedtest.net has an API.

Hmm.. well I know when I used the Image Ready slicer and 'save for web' (what ever that option is called) it didn't lose quality but collapsed the size.

Only one good way to find that out! ;)

I could think of a few ways of using PHP and a database to pull the right image based off of some speed test results/cookie. That might be the only decent way of getting there.

Side note here's an article that highlights some of the trickery involved on getting good looking images at a fraction of the size.
