How to use my VPS?

Posted 27 September 2011 - 12:08 PM

Hi, I have a VPS account and I'd like to understand how to configure it and use it to its fullest extent. Can anyone suggest a good source of info on this? Do I just need to get into Web Servers and go from there?

This is an extremely broad question - What exactly do you plan on using your VPS for?

Is it just web hosting? Then yes you need to learn about web servers, asin, which is best for your usage, etc etc.

Can you outline exactly what you will be using it for?

Thanks Rudy - I make WordPress sites and I know a lot about how to do that. But I know zip about servers and I want to learn more. The sorts of question I have are:

* Can I install my own software on a VPS, like for example a Web Host Manager?
* Can I upgrade PHP and add extension libraries?
* What sorts of programs and services are available for this environment? (particularly open source)
* Does a VPS have command line control? Where do I learn about that?
* Are there services that can make my work flow easier in terms of editing files online, ease of uploading, etc?

A VPS is nothing.. What I mean by this is that it's not something special, it's just the "type" of hosting.

It's your own server, so it will either run Windows or Linux. If it's Windows (unlikely) you'll control it over Remote Desktop, if it's Linux, you'll control it over SSH (the 'command line control').

Due to this being your own server you can do absolutely anything you want with it, you can install whatever version of PHP, whatever extensions you want, whatever software you want. What programs/services you can install is only limited to what operating system / distro that your server is running.

All you need to edit files online is to install FTP then you can upload files as you would to any other hosting environment.

A VPS is a Virtual Private Server, it is a bit like an FTP server, just slightly advanced. VPSes are meant best for hosting games. They are a bit faster then your normal server. I only used a VPS once, and it looked like my FTP server. Though yours could be differant.

This wasn't much help I guess.
