Is there a way to run Wordpress on a Windows Desktop?
While at work I have sometime to practice. However, my company blocks my webhosting company.
I'd like to practice administering WP, but can't access it during work.
Anyone have any ideas or other ISP's in the US, that I could join for a low monthly with Wordpress?
Thanks for your help in advance,

Hi,
Have you thought about a portable version of xampp on a usb?
one possibility?
Google will answer your questions for WordPress hosting sites, or try the WordPress site which has many suggestions of available sites (p.s it does not have to be in the us to use as a host, as far as I am aware my host is 3000km away from me).
Another possibility is accessing your home pc by remote access could try: logmein there are many around that deal with the hassles of security and protection (my workplace blocks a lot of blogging sites, facebook, youtube, etc but it still allows access to these type of sites)

you can run a wordpress based site on you lrptop using Microsoft WebMatrix, which also helps you to setup a virtual server so that you can save any updates you make to the site without needing a server to load it onto straight away.

I doubt you have enough time at work to do too much non-related stuff... so you might be best off just reading through the blogs. Here are just a few:
Those sites, along with google, should help you find great articles and other websites/blogs that will also help you!
- ProBlogger
- Lorelle
- Codex (Ultra important for modifications)
- Wordpress Beginner
- Justin Tadlock (often posts some pretty advanced things but documents them fantastically)

If you're looking into seriously working with servers, get a linux box up and running. Any old computer will do. Install an easier distro (say, Ubuntu) and get to work building a working server, a hint as to where to get started: LAMP.
With a Linux box you can SSH into it from anywhere if you configure your router properly (and VNC to get a graphic environment as well) and it's all encrypted.
