Trouble-shooting help remote MS Access connection

Posted 28 September 2011 - 04:29 PM

Hi,

I've written a small program and built an exe. The program works fine but I am experiencing issues writing to the remote database when the program is launched during workstation (win7) startup (using the system account)
If I check the event viewer I see these errors:

Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task Category
Error 9/28/2011 3:20:53 PM Application Error 1000 (100) "Faulting application name: myapp.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x4e832c9b

Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\KERNELBASE.dll

Report Id: 12487398-e9dd-11e0-a41e-001bfc2c3ce1"
Error 9/28/2011 3:20:51 PM .NET Runtime 1026 None Application: myapp.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: System.InvalidOperationException
Stack:
at System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionInternal.OpenConnection(System.Data.Common.DbConnection, System.Data.ProviderBase.DbConnectionFactory)
at System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection.Open()

I have checked share and security permissions on the folder and the system account has full access, I even tried allowing the everyone group full access but to no avail.

If I put the database on the local computer then it works fine, and there are no errors. Also, If I excecute the program whilst I am logged in to the computer then everything is good. My logs are written to the remote database.

I'm a bit lost on how resolve this problem. is there a way to test if the system account can write to my share?

Here is my connection string:

connString = ("provider=microsoft.ace.oledb.12.0;Data Source=\\dcsrv01\log$\mydb.accdb")

Any help is much appreciated

TIA

Just a thought - is the address in the connection string referring to a computer on a workgroup? If so, try checking that you have full access to the computer and try via FTP or samba or some other means.

Oh, I almost forgot

I don't think you can access a folder in this way(log$) if no one is logged in. Try sharing the folder, change your connection string and see if then works

Hi all,

The computer in the conn string is on the same domain I am attached to. I can access this computer fine. I have tried mounting the share on other computers but see the same problem.

I tried removing the $ sign from the share and recreated but to no avail.

If I look at the share folder whilst my test computer is starting up I can see that the database does open, but for some reason the system account is not able to write to it.

Cheers

Resolved the problem by ditching MS Access and using MS 2008 SQL server
