The fiery gates leading to the Burning Hells have begun to swing open, and the Diablo III beta test is officially underway. Invitations to participate in the beta test are now being delivered to the chosen heroes. As with beta tests for other Blizzard Entertainment games, the testing process for Diablo III will occur in phases. In addition to selecting players who have opted in via their Battle.net accounts, we’ll also be providing keys through beta promotions and giveaways -- stay tuned for more info. We welcome those invited to provide feedback or report bugs on the official forums.

If you have a beta license, you are free to show, share, or talk about any portion of the beta content to which you have access, as this beta test is not confidential.

Then the character cap? So what, I am going to have to pay if I want more than 10 character slots? That's bull.

This worked the same way in D2...just create another account. :P

A few highlights from the Ars beta review..

Quote

The biggest change is the complete loss of the skill tree. You won't have to decide what skills you'd like to gain or build up. Instead, skills will be unlocked as you gain levels, and you can choose which skills to place in one of your active skills slots. You begin with two slots, and gain more as you become more powerful, until you have six slots to use at any given time.

The other big change is the ability to sell items whenever you'd like. Simply click on the cauldron in your inventory

You can also break down items you don't need in order to gain material for crafting

The animations are fluid and combat is just as engaging as ever.

I should've been more specific. The selling items part isn't half bad, I've played a few games like that, the method works well.

But the fact that the skill tree is gone is just straight up unappealing to me. Messing with skills and testing out new builds was what made Diablo II fun for me, I probably would've only had one play through with each class if I hadn't been able to mess with all my skills like I had been.

I remember I had 3 different Druids at one time on D2: LOD, I had a pure elemental, pure summoning, and pure shape shifting skilled druids, and I still mixed them up when I played through with those.

I'm disappoint Blizzard, I really am.

I knew what you were probably aiming for, but felt like ribbing you for more explanation. Success!

From what I can tell this reconfig your character on the fly" is probably to help with the online/co-op play. Instead of starting back at zero you can experiment as you go. when I max out my character I can see myself fiddling with a dash of this and a sprinkle of that.

Based on what I'm hearing, D3 will also appeal to those with lives outside of gaming.

How is that possible? Angry birds as enemies perhaps?

I do agree that a lot of the appeal of rpgs is skill building and selection. It does kind of reduce the appeal to me (as I think I mentioned in the thread) but I'm willing to wait and see before I decide to entirely forgo the experience.

Moved to lounge (will merge with existing thread in a sec).

The last I heard it was pushed back to sometime in 2012, with probably means around Christmas.
