Please review my site

Posted 10 October 2011 - 05:45 AM

Hello,

I have started my very first web site to share utilities I write in my spare time. The address is http://opalapps.com. Please take a look at the site and my very first utility "SparseChecker" and let me know what else could be done to improve both site usability and "SparseChecker".

Special thanks in advance to people who will try the "SparseChecker" out and provide some feedback.

Regards

Hi MirrorFish

No offence but the site is very bland.
I think that you should use more graphics on it.
Also try to use a banner do something in photoshop.
In your footer i picked up the word materials should be singular does`nt make sense.
On your contact us page use a mailto and make that email a click through.
Also your navigation bar I think add a bit more to it.
Change the navigation read up on css will help you a great deal.
Hope that this will help you abit.

Hello "ProdicalProgrammer",

Thanks a lot for your feedback. No doubts your comments are useful. I thought about most of them earlier but wanted to know the opinion of majority (potentially more skilled than I am).

Briefly about hints you gave me:
"More graphics" - less text (usability hint "don't make your user think too much") - I do agree on it. Will improve it soon.
"MailTo" - yes, but I didn't want to get my email parsed out by search bots. Correct me if I am wrong.
"Navigation bar" - yes. Agree - has to be corrected. About CSS - I am not sure I understand you correctly. If you have time - please explain with more details or drop a link to an article where it is explained.

Once again - thanks for the criticism. You have been very helpful.

Regards

Dont go less text just add more graphics in there.
Less text means less SEO ranking whole new issue.
Read up on this should help you with CSS and HTML.

Good point again - about SEO. Also thanks for the link to CSS.

P.S. Although I appreciate your opinion I would like to get more criticism before making changes. And take some time for reading about in the meantime CSS ;)

Cool, I love to see sites where people are putting out there work for consumption.

A few comments I have:

-While reading up on CSS pay attention to padding and margins. A little bit of this will make it easier to read.

-Maybe look for an article on font choice. Certain fonts are easier to read, and others will bring a user's attentions to it (could be used for headers or something)

-http://www.colourlovers.com/ check this site out for color palettes. There will be a bunch of palettes and they will include the hex codes for the colors, so you'll have colors on your page that work together.

Looks good, now its just time to dig into your template and use colors, fonts, and layout to drive your use cases and message.

No offense, but I know that much already. Otherwise why would I ask for critics here ? So any hints ?

To be honest, i don't think it needs much at all. Perhaps if the menu was a little more spanky with some a:hover action in your css and a different font or perhaps a little more presence. I enjoy the simplistic layout, it suits the purpose of what you are doing. The Other thing you could do would be to throw a nice header of some kind in there, perhaps have a top margin so the page is more centered vertically in the browser.

I like it :)

Hmm, its not meant to be stylish, but those colors aren't that great. I use http://colorschemedesigner.com/ to select color schemes

I hope this helps

Hello DaneAU,
I will consider adding header, or at least - centering the page vertically.
Thanks,
Regards

Hello Bookmonkey,
Nice tool - thanks. Looks like #8BEA00 is closest to colors on my site. Only the dark green would use some adjustment though.

This is not an area to sell your work, nor is it encouraged to say a members work warrants you doing a complete redesign. Please review the site in question, it's quite disrespectful to do this.

----------

As far as the site itself, it's not all that bad, but can use some refinement.

The color scheme is acceptable, but I would encourage the use of only 2-3 colors (not including black and white) as the base of your site. This adds more uniformity to the site, and is visually more pleasing.

One of the biggest issues I have with the site is that there is no white space inside the block elements. Whitespace is either the padding or margins of an element that add blank space. This space is crucial to the flow of a page, normally anywhere from 10 to 50px, depending on what you feel looks the best.

I would personally avoid using all caps for the menu, it slows down reading speed substantially. I would consider changing the link color to match that of the overall site scheme. Add more space between the links as well.

I'm not a fan of the "No x" graphic towards the bottom, and would probably remove it.

The background blends with the current page, I would consider adding either a subtle gradient, subtle pattern, or slightly darker color as the background. Note that I use the word subtle, the point of a background is to accent the foreground, not detract attention from it.

Overall, not a bad start to the site. With a little refinement it can really shine.

Hello Lemur,

Thanks a lot for your analysis. Very practical and constructive review.

From here I think of my question about the site as answered.

My reaction to it when it came up was a negative one.
The text at the top didn't appeal to me.
I do like the concept.
The program description sounded too confusing, which may be due to my lack of understanding what you're program is about. Didn't try it yet.

Question, by zero-bytes, do you mean files that have nothing but zeros in them?
I got hit by a virus a long time ago and I still find files that are not functional any more. they are made of nothing but zeros when viewed with a file editor.

Wish I had a way to search them out. Mostly pix and mp3s.

Hello,

Thanks for the replay. I am working on new design at the moment. People here already pointed me at problems most visitors having on my site. Thanks once again to all of you who spent some time reviewing the site.

As for the program description - perhaps you are right, but I tried to make the description as simple as possible. Some basics about the problem, existing solutions and finally - description of how "SparseChecker" solves the problem. But I still would be considering any suggestions for clarification of the description.

I don't insist on my writing talents here though ;).

By zero-bytes I mean files that contain some valid data, but most of this data is zero. So "SparseChecker" would make these zero parts of the file not occupy the disk space. The best thing here is that this process is transparent to all software that uses the file.

So you want the solution that searches the file system and reports files that consist of 100% zero data ?
I guess I could easily add this to "SparseChecker 0.4". Please confirm that I understood your problem correctly.
