IT/Engineering students are not good in English?

Posted 10 October 2011 - 11:13 PM

During college days, one of my instructors told us that if you are Engineering or IT students
you are not good in English. Unlike other courses such as business course, education etc. they are
enhance to speak English.

Well, in our course (Computer Engineering) we were enhanced in Math and programming languages.
Can we considered the two as cause?
I don't think so it's true.

I assume you are referring to non-native English speakers that study CS, CE, EE?

I would say it's probably true-- for the most part CS and EE are very intensive fields and many people don't have the time to study a foreign language while making good headway in CS/CE/EE.

Eh, I see we're from the same country. I say it's the laziness of students. I have classmates who did not bother to brush up on their English skills. Don't blame the choice of subjects for your lack of skills in communicating in English. Hey, even in engineering and IT courses, there are English subjects. It's your problem you did not make the most of them. I often hear complaints like "this subject is only a minor, lets not waste our time here and focus on the programming stuff instead". You should do well on all your subjects, not just your majors. They are there for a reason, and that is to make you a well-rounded professional.
Plus English is our second language, so what is your excuse? You've been taught English since you were in nursery. :P

I'd say it's a generalization that wouldn't be super difficult to justify, people who are math oriented can often be lacking in English skills, but it's certainly not a rule and quite possibly not even the majority. There are many very literate people posting in this forum.
On top of that, I would argue that the majority of the entire population are "not good in English."

@hookie,

It also depends on what "English" you are speaking of, British, American, Austrailian, etc. Each "English country has its own way of doing things and even with in that country there are variations of the language.
Example:

My state says roof like if it were a dog's bark.
other states say rovs.

even in my own city there are variations:

creek
vs
crick

Is there really a good for of 'English"? Probably not.

I think we're more concerned with written English, such as grammar and vocabulary here, than accents and pronunciation. Even though spelling may vary by country, what's generally acceptable in one's own area is usually reasonably specific.

I am a bit confused - is this the classic "IT nerds can't speak to normal people" discussion, or "Filipino IT nerds do not want to learn a foreign language such as English" discussion?
