Ok for a classes final project i have to make a game(a little early but she's giving us the time to go ahead and get started and research the details) but a little stuck on where to begin on the pixel art that i'd like to design for it(now that i've planned most of it ). What i'm wondering is where would be the best place to learn how to do some simple pixel art? As well what software to use(please don't say PS because i don't feel like paying a arm and a leg for it)?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

PS: it's will be a game based on the lost colony of Roanoke and be made in pygame(that's what the class teaches )

MS Paint's not bad.. Paint++, Paint.NET.. nothing too fancy.

Well i knew that much, a tutorial i found(not very good direction wise on how to do pixel art) said to use something like graphics gale(not sure if that's really all that great)...it's just the concept of it i'm having trouble on...thanks for the links
Edit: i'd also found tilestudio a long time ago just never did figure out how to export that stuff to what i needed(never found the libs for it) since that software made it easy for the grass and stuff like that with it's random pattern which was nice...but it seems to of died off the last i checked

Okay.. so articulate what your problem is or what you are conceptually having problems with.

Well technically picking the best software(since i know of a few and have heard of others) and properly designing good pixel art

Gale functions just like Paint.NET with it's grid on and zoomed in. It comes moderately recommended. Go pick it up, or snag a demo.

Yea the second i found and that's where i'd been recommended to use gale, but didn't give a great guide(in my opinion) on how to use the software...

Paint is by far the best program for pixel art that I've ever tried, and I've tried just about all of them. One of the best features is that you don't have to worry about buying and/or downloading anything as it is already on every windows machine.

Try searching "graphics gale tutorial". An explosion of links popped up - even video tutorials!

@Kil - yeah, but that blue apple says s/he might not have access to Paint.

I really like mtPaint. It's free and it has a lot of good features that most pixel art programs don't have.

For the software I would suggest either MS Paint or GALE, or a mixture of both.

Some people use GIMP but it often forces anti-aliasing (which for pixel-art is BAD!). GIMP is a great option if you know how to set it up for pixel-art. Otherwise I'd primarily use GALE and then edit images further in MS Paint.
