Book review section on DIC

Posted 18 October 2011 - 05:55 AM

Hello,

Perhaps I am not the first who proposes this but I haven't found the relevant post or similar proposal on the site. Sorry if otherwise. So, to my proposal:

I guess most of practicing programmers read books. But not all books are equally good (I don't have some particular book in mind here). So I would propose to provide a short review after reading a book that someone can quickly decide whether it worth the time to read it. Also these who have read the same book can discuss it in the same topic as the review has been posted. Which would add even bigger value to that review.

Regards

Mirror fish,

Great post, I have used some of the worste books in the past and perhaps a section like this would be great for everyone to see what books are the best and which ones flounder.

A lot of the Programmers subforums for a lot of our languages have a Which Book thread. You might find those helpful. If you come across a language which does not have a pinned thread, feel free to PM a forum leader, mentor, or team member about pinning such a thread. :)

That is true but what about books like "The pragmatic programmer", "Clean code", "The Mythical Man-Month" ? D.Knuth, after all. There is no language specifics there. Not to mention stuff that is not related to programming (or even IT) but yet highly appreciated by most of math-minded programmers. Like "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman".

Perhaps those would be better off in the Software Development section. If you want to get one going, I'll pin it for ongoing discussion. :)

Yes, why not ? After all if there are only few interested - mo mater how logical or useful is the proposal. Will see if there are more book lovers out there ;)
