Hosting your own site with Ubuntu 11.10?

Posted 21 October 2011 - 06:41 PM

I really want to host my own site, I can't pay for anything. But I have heard of people running servers on Ubuntu, I was wondering if it was possible on 11.10?

I just want a server, not like localhost or anything, one that is viewable by other people. I don't want to port-forward if possible.

I would be more descriptive, but I don't know much about this sort of thing. :dozingoff:

Well there's always LAMP... You'll need a stable IP address and a domain name to point to it.. not recommended for a box you use on a daily basis.

From there you can install things like Drupal or Wordpress.. ftp server and all that jazz.

You only need to forward ports if you are behind a router. Your isp provided modem is going to hand off any port 80 requests. Your router will drop the traffic if there is no rule in place specifically saying which ip to forward the traffic to.

It's not matter of which OS will do it, any OS can run a program that hooks a socket on a port & listens. That's the easy part. The question is if your ISP allows your account to accept port 80 traffic.

Step 1 :

Call your isp & verify that they allow traffic on port 80.

Alright, I got localhost working. Thanks..

(It works!

This is the default web page for this server.

The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet.)
