Which Language to Start With?

Posted 22 October 2011 - 12:51 PM

Hello !

I'm thinking to get into programming world, but I really don't know how and where to begin,I am thinking to start with C++ language but I'm not sure . If there is anyone who can show me the best path to begin it would be very helpful .

I don't even know where to study, should I use online guides , video tutorials or something else .

So my questions are : Which is the best programming language to start with ?
and,
Whats the best way of learning a programming language?

Thank you very much!

*Moved to Software Development*

There are a lot of languages that are good to learn. C++ is fine if you want to learn it. I'm sure each person will advocate for their own favorite languages with some pretty good reasons. Really, just pick a language. The only way you'll get better at programming is by programming.

We have a lot of tutorials you may find helpful. :)

I cover this topic extensively in the following article...

Which Language is Best?

The truth of the matter is, the best language for you to learn and start with is the one that....

1) Seems most natural to you and easy for you to understand. After all, your goal here is break into the programming world and once you do that with one language you will find picking up others gets easier.

2) Teaches you the Object Oriented Programming paradigm. C++/C#/Java/VB.NET/Python/PHP/Ruby all use objects to some extent.

3) What kind of programmer do you want to be? Obviously if you are wanting to be a web developer then you are going to get more mileage out of a language like PHP or Ruby vs C++. If you are wanting to do desktop, then C++/Java might be a better example. Want to make windows GUI apps in a snap? Then C# or VB.NET might be more to your liking.

Either way, look at a few of the more wide spread popular languages, find one that is easy enough for you to read, write, understand and start with that. You want to avoid having to struggle with the language itself why you are trying to grip the techniques.

:)

It depends if you want to make sites, or programs.

If you are looking into programming,I suggest Python. Its a quick and simple languages, but can do heaps!
I wouldn't jam your head with C++ straight away, its a hard languages, start basic then build up.

A GREAT place to start learning is here:
A Byte of Python: Book

If you are looking into web development, I suggest HTML and CSS for starters then move to PHP, Javascript and SQL.

Hope I helped slightly.

I'd say you should really start with Intercal. If you can program in that, you can program in anything.

It really depends on what you want want to do! If you want to go into web development than I'd suggest PHP, if you're keen on becoming a game developer then I'd suggest C++ or C# (for XNA) and if you just want to learn about programming or do a course in it then I'd suggest Java - as that's most likely what you'd be using anyway. :)

Oh and I'd personally recommend picking up a C syntax language (C, C++, C#, Java, PHP, etc.) because of their ubiquity.
