So lets say we stick with 2D games, I've always wanted to try and make a RPG type game but we'd need a script writer, a top down puzzle game or a side scrolling action game would be fun too.

I'd love to do a zelda style rpg, like link's awakening. I'm sure between everyone we could come up with a story.

Since I absolutely love zelda games, I am definitely down for a 2d zelda style game.

Me too, I love Zelda games, and there was a very similar one to Zelda on the Playstation called Alundra and it's sequel Alundra 2.

I was thinking about Legend of Zelda : Links Awakening the other day and it was awesome, so I would be fully on board with the idea. Plus it uses a lot of concepts that are would be great for people to learn if they have never done them before like tile engine/multipart sprites/enemy ai. Also the chance to incorporate more complex features like lighting (possibly a dark dungeon, with character having lantern)

Should we cast a vote or something?

Skyward sword has rekindled my love of zelda, and I always did like the 2d ones best. That idea certainly gets a vote from me.

I think the biggest roadblock to ANY game for us all to work on is going to be art assets. How many pixel artists do we have here?

I think the answer to that would probably be 0 :| I can do the odd sprite, but I'm not great, or fast.

I have friends that would be able to possibly help with art and sound, however they are all currently doing their final year of university and time is pretty tight so not sure how much they would be able to do.

I would love to help with this, especially if it's a Zelda style game. This would be an awesome learning experience. What if we did a hurt/heal thread for the type of game we want to make?

What do you mean by Hurt/Heal?

Anyway I'm no good at graphics either but I'm sure there are plenty of tile sets out there for this type of game, we just have to go and find them, and of course making sure it's all open source material.

Hurt/heal? Uh..... normal multi-choice poll, anyone?

Who knows, maybe by the time we get this started we'll find/get some one joining that could help. At least, Like ShadowsEdge said, there's open source stuff to fall back on. I know I'm not gonna be any help. I can't even make a decent looking health bar... and that's just a fancy line.

I've toyed with pixel art a bit and have created a few characters with walk cycle animations in the four primary directions, but haven't attempted any combat animations. I'd be willing to spend a little time on sprites if necessary as well as offer my skills on the programming side of things.

Here's a quick image file I put together with two of the characters that I've done in the idle_left pose. These are zoomed in to about 500% of their current size, which by default is 18x24. They're obviously heavily influenced by the sprites in Final Fantasy VI, which just happens to be my favorite game of all time. The default size for sprites in Final Fantasy VI was 16x24, I decided to make them just a bit wider for a reason that I can't seem to remember now, though.

This is an example of a hurt heal voting system:

http://www.chess.com...orical-players2

It can be better then a straight popularity vote because it gives you the chance to discuss the decision as it's being made. It can take a little longer, which is why people like .Aaron may not like it, but I think the results are usually better.
