That 'X' can only win with the top row, or the left-to-right downward diagonal.

If you want some other context besides Tic-Tac-Toe maybe you should tell us a little more about your homework... Like what context did you run across this symbol? Is it from railroads, automobile design, the physics of spring tension in a toaster... Because leaving it wide open like you did gives us the entire cosmos to research.

If you consider only a 2d representation of a rubik's cube...then yes that square does indeed look like such an object.

It could also be the world's tiniest sudoku board. Hence, we need perspective.

you take this question to literal-- you can't really be serious in answering something that has no parameters.....

Haha, it looks to me like a messed up glider.

That symbol is called a "Glider." It's an object (spaceship) from Conway's Game of Life.

Essentially, the glider makes Conway's Game of Life Turing complete and thus makes the game able to create anything. The Glider is the symbol of a programmer-- hacker.

Well, it's not really a 'game.' But yea! I am surprised you are not familiar with it.

Why? I'm not much of a gamer. The last arcade game I played was GORF. I've also never watched a 'reality' show. The last show I watched about people stranded on an island had a catchy jingle, hot blond and a dork in a red hat ("Gilligan's Island" for the kiddies out there) I have no idea what the Kardashian family is famous for or why their daughters were given a TV show or why anyone gives a shyte that one got married.

If you are surprised I'm unfamiliar with CGoL, that would suppose you expect a lot of people to know about it. So why is it so popular/well known?

Update:
Oh, wait. We own a Wii. The wife uses it for Tiger Woods golf and I do WiiFit.

Well, Conway is a pretty famous mathematician and his work has been very influential in cellular automation. A large number of algorithms have benefited from his work... kind of gets into chaos theory, fractals and all kinds of goodies. The 'game of life' was a simple algorithm to demonstrate how a tiny formula can generate such chaos and interesting things.

If you are interested in self-organization and other cool algorithms you should give it a look. It's also a great programming project.
