The first GTA I played was Vice City, and it impressed me very well. So I played San Andreas and got lost in its world. The furthest I got was the Valet mission in San Fierro. That's the GTA game too that I watched and payed attention to the story.
3 I've played for just a little time(less than an hour), and 4 I have no idea how I could play it.
Seems to me that a powerful PC would be the only solution.
Anyway, on the subject of GTA becoming repetitive I doubt it. Rockstar makes tons of games with free roaming and they're most of the time stellar. Case in point: Bully, Manhunt, Red Dead Redemption.
If you're still pointing at GTA, well, the story is almost always great.
Plus, a new main addition on the GTA series means that Rockstar loaded it with tons of new things.
Well, we could hope anyway,

A new city would be nice. I haven't played GTA4 yet, but with the ones I played I have to agree that San Andreas was the best. 3 cities, RPG like features, there was nothing like it when it came out. Hey, I even forgot Vice City when I played that game. It doesn't hurt that the story was good too, and the dialogue was funny.
@Tarkenfire's dig on Saints Row 2 being better than GTA... Well, the only free roaming game I liked except for GTA was Scarface. A free roam game fails for me if it fails to create the atmosphere that you are in another place. I felt I visited Miami on that one, albeit the adventure was laced with drugs and violence.
"My name is Tony Montana! Don't you ****ing mess with me!"
Good times.
