Client side hashing wouldn't be a bright idea, considering we'd be able to see the code (javascript) and we'd know what the salt was, which would defeat the purpose of a salt to begin with. There are no built-in hashing mechanisms into JS that I'm aware of. I'm about 99% willing to bet that the hashing happens at the server.

As long as we're logging in over SSL, we're fine. MD5 isn't the best hash out there, but it's better than nothing.

Hashing on the client-side is definitely possible, i.e. it can be done with Javascript. However it's definitely not a good idea as you wouldn't be able to use a salt! I've never heard of client-side hashing for that reason.

Regarding MD5, it's already been broken and is inferior to hashes such as SHA-2, which has yet to be broken. :)

That'll learn ya for asking a technical question in the lounge.

Did you get your answer? Did you make sure to shake twice before putting it away? Can you show us on the bear where the succulent knowledge touched you?

if i hadn't started with C++, it would probably look like a horrible language to me too. it has to be one of the most ridiculously complex languages out there. still, i would take it over assembly any day.
