Does not really fit under graphic design but...

Okay, I am trying to cut out a circular notch in that octagonal base using the Solid Tool (Subtract). Why in heavens name does the base not qualify as a solid? The base itself was initially a rectangle. I used the solid tools to cut out the vertices and those rectangles. No issue then. What have I done?
