Believe it or not, that doesn't exempt a single person from potentially being affected by it. A "lesser subset" of the general population is raped, that doesn't make rape less of a problem.

I admit that SOPA is a problem, and am honestly feeling for those that will be affected by it. I was never saying that it isn't a problem, just that it's not a big problem. Look at it this way: SOPA is nothing new. China, for one, is Super SOPA in action. Yet the Chinese keep finding ways around it. From one aspect, SOPA is good - it'll definitely spike up the hacker creativity level in the US, and encourage a lot of people to get interested in those technologies that are used to force SOPA.

Most of the Chinese work arounds actually come from American hackers. Google for one used to lead the political front trying to un censor china internet.

Just a heads up - I would rather *NOT* have SOPA floating around than have it be in effect (and being enforced) to have some potential "spike up the hacker creativity level in the US"... just say'n let's not get crazy.

I disagree. Comparing it to something worse doesn't make it any less of a problem or not as "big" of a problem. Comparisons as a whole in this regard is pointless. In this regard, you can almost insert X crap for Y situation in any given scenario and make it seem less problematic. Obviously not true. I consider the potential risk SOPA and PIPA poses as a big concern.

So reddit is going to have a blackout... will it work? I doubt it. If Google, Amazon and Facebook all joined in then it would have a massive impact (as well as the Internet coming to a standstill... I think even DIC uses Amazon servers?). I hope it works though!

So... sort of win?

Quote

House Kills SOPA
Representative Eric Cantor(R-VA) announced that he will stop all action on SOPA, effectively killing the bill. This move was most likely due to several things. One of those things is that SOPA and PIPA met huge online protest against the bills. Another reason would be that the White House threatened to veto the bill if it had passed. However, it isn't quite time yet to celebrate, as PIPA(the Senate's version of SOPA) is still up for consideration.

A small victory, but PIPA is still on the table.

Do not take this concession as a victory!
This is an old trick. Please spread the word and call them out repeatedly.
1: Make crazy offer (SOPA) 2: Client rejects crazy offer (us) 3: Make a "reasonable" offer (PIPA) 4: Client accepts offer because it seems reasonable compared to crazy offer.
Don't let up.

If they do pass, lord help us... Anon will ramp up activity and new users will come flooding in, all of which ready to do something. With this much cannon fodder, the more experienced hackers lurking around the back of the lines will have enough power to do even more damage. The problem? No matter how much cannon fodder gets arrested, more will come. Unless they hit the heart it's going to get real bad real fast.

Oh, and it's not like bills that were rejected never come up and pass silently (NDAA anyone?)

We stopped SOPA, admittedly the lesser of the two evils, and now have PIPA to deal with. I should note that most of the quotes on the internet that talk about it aren't actually from SOPA, they're from the addendum clauses that got thrown out, which coincidentally, happen to have been taken from PIPA. SOPA would have been an annoyance. PIPA is the one that needs to stop, because it's the one that throws everything to the wind and says no due process, no stopping it, no fighting it, just die because copyright holders want you to until you can wiggle your way up and prove that you didn't do anything.
