Ubuntu wifi woes

Posted 02 December 2011 - 08:01 PM

I have a 10.04 Ubuntu Desktop edition live CD, and I was trying to boot from it to install it to my computer.

When I got the CD booted, and I went into trial mode to test a few things first, I noticed immediately that my wifi isn't working.

I don't know if it is my wifi card, or my drivers, but I don't know how I could fix those problems without having an internet connection, and the only way I can connect to the internet at my house is via wifi.

Does anyone have any ideas of what I can do?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

10.04 is pretty old, even though it is the current LTS version. Try a later version, like 11.10.

I do remember there were some network related errors around that time. I had to go mess with the configuration of the network drivers in order to get my Ethernet connection going. All of that has been fixed since in the later versions. A fix for whatever is causing your WiFi problems may well already have been implemented.

Edit:
I found this note from 2010-06. It's what I did to fix my Ethernet problem in 10.04:
File: /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf

Remove all references to "rfc3442" and reconnect.

I've been using 10.04 because I don't want to use Unity.

I'll try that fix that you suggested and come back with my results.

You don't have to use Unity with the 11.x versions. You can select the "Classic" desktop from the Login screen to get the old Gnome desktop.

First, are you 100% certain that your wifi card is enabled at the hardware level? Do you have any led indicator that it is powered on?

If so I would open a command prompt & issue ifconfig | grep -i wi or iwconfig & see if it's there.

With regards to Ubuntu, is this a recent issue, or has it never worked?

lspci and look for your device. More than likely it's broadcom if the wireless isn't working properly.

Maybe since it's a Live CD it might not be recognising the modem? Not too sure, just throwing suggestions around.

Modem != Wireless Ethernet.

Yes, I'm sure my card is working, the little built-in switch on my laptop says it's green (= on).

Okay.

I tried removing the "rfc42" thing, didn't work.

I also tried creating a wireless network, but that didn't work (I don't know the MAC address, not sure if that has to do with it, but it asks for it.)

Also, I booted up Linux Mint 11 and that also doesn't detect any of the multiple connections in my area.

edit:
After a new search on google (for Mint support), I found some support for my exact laptop model, so I'm going to try out what's in that thread and come back.

edit 2:
After using the information in the link I posted above, I was able to figure out why my wireless connections aren't showing up in both mint and ubuntu.

I can attempt to connect to the networks around me, but it just sits there, loops for a few minutes, and then it asks for the password again. (I know it's correct, I'm using it right now)

That's because I didn't know what to do with them other than stick them into the command line.

I'm still really new to Linux...

I can't be there to help you with it. So you type in the commands, & post back here it's output.

Then I read what you replied, & I instruct you further.

Not sure how I fixed it, but I fiddled with my wifi card (physically) and it some how works now. I've completely removed Windows from my computer and I run Linux Mint 11 :)
