Any of you folks ever work on the development of a quantitative securities trading application?
If yes, would it be possible (and if yes would it be practical) to develop such with VB.Net?
If so, what would the other required tools be? This I ask because I don't see too many (or any now that I think about it) job or project opportunities for vb.net alone; things like asp.net, sql, and a dozen other things I don't know yet (or even know what they are for that matter) are always included as additional required competencies. I don't know enough yet to determine if any given instance is a function of the individual environment, the 22 year old HR Assistant doing a copy and paste job from other ads without knowing anything about anything, or the technical need to always have an application do things through or harvest information from other systems.

Work for an investment bank and you will get a chance to contribute to these projects.

I am aware of the type of firm that has an algorithmic trading area. In addition to investment banks, there are quite a few boutiques that employ that approach. Some are nothing but an electronic quantitative analysis boutique. My question is more focused on the software itself and the development and implementation thereof.
