I'm getting the error message "can't connect to host at [ip address] on port 22 connection refused"

Any ideas what this could be? I feel like a bit of a n00b because I've only just had it set up

When I connect to my server I use port 21 - also, if it is a server hosted by a major company try looking if they have any help files available - good sites should.

But the ssh config files, and the output of iptables are all as they should be, it isn't a firewall blocking my connection. Any ideas for troubleshooting? is there a way to reset the ssh_config file?

Are you sure sshd is running?

Two question :

1.) Have you ever been able to ssh to this server? Is the question that it is broken or that it needs setup?

2.) What Operating System is setup on the server?

I've identified that the problem is that SSH is somehow damaged.. removing and re-installing didn't seem to help either. Just going to have a word with my host and get them to sort it I think. Thanks for the help

You might also make sure that SSH isn't running on a strict setting and logs are always as great place to look for more information.
