Hi, I have recently been tasked with creating a knowledge base where we can access our Technical References from. I have created the template to a page, but rather that turn all the Word Documents into HTML pages i would prefer to be able to search through them and find what i need. Unfortunately i haven't got a clue where to start when i comes to creating a 'search engine'.
In short i need a search engine that can search Key Words in Microsoft Office Documents on a server and post the correct ones back as links on the web page. How would i go about this best.

If you're feeling especially lazy, you can save word documents as html files directly in word (although this will produce terrible code, it will at least work and have the content).
Doing this will mean you have a set of nice HTML files to search though, and from there you can use an existing search engine. A lot of the major ones offer personal site searches for free, usually you just fill in a simple form and they give you the code to use.

do you have to do a custom search engine for your site or could you incorporate one that's already been developed? i.e. a google search?
