Game Programming Challenge 1 - EVIL!

I don't want the non-XNAers left out so I thought I throw a challenge out to the rest of you. You're free to use any language and libraries you'd like, other than XNA. If you want to use XNA than you can do the current XNA challenge with the same theme.

Challenge:
Evil!

Description:
Usually in games the player is the good guy often saving the world from evil. I thought Id turn the tables this time and make the player the bad guy. Id like to see a game where the player is truly evil. Good examples of this are the Overlord games.

Requirements:
The main requirement for this one is that the player gets to play the bad guy. Im not requiring menus or anything else. Having menus, high scores and other elements you find in a game will net you bonus points. I'm willing to install any libraries required to run your games. I have a Linux machine so I should be able to test any games written for Linux. Unfortunately there is no way for me to test games written for a Mac so you Mac users are left out. Sorry.

Scoring:
I will not take points off of a project for artwork or lack thereof. This is a programming challenge, not an art challenge. Im looking for game play over assets. A game that is fun to play and doesn't have the best art will score higher than a game that doesn't play well and looks good and plays poorly. Youve completed the challenge and have a chance to win Gold, Silver or Bronze.

Gather your resources and begin writing your games! You have until February 8th to get your submission in. Anything submitted after February 8th will not be accepted. You do not have submit your source code, but you can if you wish. All that I require is your output directory.

If you have any difficulties with your entry you are free to ask for help in the Game Programming forum here at Dream.In.Code.

Best of luck in this game programming adventure!

Did I happen to mention how much of the devil you are six? The moment I read this three ideas popped into my head (one inspired by a recent lounge discussion)... grrr... There goes my afternoon.

That is exactly what I was hoping. To inspire and bring ideas into people's heads. I tried to come up with a theme that offered a wide variety of possibilities.

Yep, remember SixOfEleven is an XNA person so must have access to Windows!

I might have a go at making one over Christmas, probably in Java.

Windows or Linux is fine. I just can't judge a Mac game because I don't have a Mac or a Mac VM.

I will be willing to judge a Mac game if it comes to that, although I doubt it will.

I might enter a flash game, due to quick development.

I wish I had the time to do something with SDL, but I don't. I know I can make something pretty quick using flash so I'm choosing that :)

Mine is coming along slowly but surely, I am starting out as text based game and will extend to graphics if I have time.

Basically my game is inspired by How the Grinch Stole Christmas... the player starts at their home spot then navigates around the map finding presents. I plan to make it so you can only carry one present at a time an get points each time you bring it home... but that might be boring so thinking about doing it on a weight based system which would add a strategic layer.

I am also hoping to have NPCs that roam the map, possibly in groups, which would lower your score if your spotted.

Simple stuff but really this is my first game so I don't want to go to complicated!

EDIT: I should note that a lot of what I am doing, I learned from SixOfEleven's XNA tutorials a while ago... its nice when techniques transfer across!

Ooh, a challenge - this will be my first one ever! =)

I can't say I'm experienced with java nor XNA (learning java and c# at the moment). But I'll give it a go even if I don't submit anything. Always good to have something to aspire too.

Good luck! Hopefully this turns out to be a nice series of challenges.

Hey Six

What is the duration of this competition. I am thinking about joining this one, I may or may not use XNA, but this sounds interesting.

Are we showing progress, screen shots and videos in this forum.

Hey Shakey,

If you want to use XNA there is an XNA specific challenge in the XNA forum. The deadline for both challenges is February 8th. It would be awesome if you'd start up a thread in this forum showing screen shots and videos as you progress.

So would making a game where you sit in a castle unable to move until the "good guy" comes to fight you as the final boss count? ;P

I'll add AI for the good guy... jk jk
