Rooting the Kindle Fire

Posted 13 December 2011 - 11:53 AM

Is it worth it to root the Kindle Fire? Meaning I will have super-user access and be able to have an Android phone like interface. I was thinking I should do this if I want to get into making Android apps.

Aren't there some Android emulators floating around out there?

Does Kindle fire use android?

I can understand a curiousity about rooting a device just to see if you could do it, but how does it help you with apps?

just curious.

Anyway, other than voiding your warranty and possibly bricking the device, I say go for it.

Kindle Fire is a pretty locked down device. Probably one of the worst. The specs aren't brilliant, either. For the price point, you'll be seeing proper Android toys in the near future.

If you want one now, now, now, I honestly think the Nook is a better bet. I have a Nook Tablet, I've read a couple books on it so far, so haven't felt the need to root the beast. I did try to dual boot it off the SD, but the Tablet requires a signed SD by default. On that note, the Nook Color can be booted from an SD out of the gate. They're cheaper than the tablet and still beat the crap out of the Kindle Fire. I'd probably opt for a Nook Color if I was looking to mess around without a huge investment.

If you don't have your heart set on a tablet, you could probably get a rooted phone second hand for a song...

I'm going to get the Kindle Fire because I will mainly read books and listen to Pandora. On some occasions I might use Netflix as I have Ubuntu and I can not figure out how to set up a VM.

Ha ha... I just like the looks of the Fire. In the end, it comes down to your opinion on the UI.

I like how they name a device for reading books after things that burn.

Just be aware there are people returning the bastard in a mildly shocking number.

I like how they try to pull an Apple: "We're pushing a software update soon! keep buying!"

customer: "your going to fix your crappy hardware design with a software update?"

Amazon: "Yup"

customer: "Never Mind, where's the Apple store?"

This makes me glad I shelled out th extra cash for the Ipad.

Why not get a Nook Color instead? There's already a big community dedicated to rooting it. Even if you plan on reading a lot, you can use the Kindle app to get all your books from Amazon anyways. Plus, like others have said, it seems like Amazon has made quite the effort to lock down the Fire.

I rode the tablet hype and got a rooted Nook Color. The only time I have used it is when I go to England to visit the family, so I don't have to cart around my heavy laptop. Plus, it's easy to charge 'cos I can just use a family member's usb port rather than fiddling with a plug converter. From my experience, I'd much rather get a smaller, lighter laptop than a tablet. Though, that might just be me. Maybe I just don't have a good use for a tablet.
