I can understand a curiousity about rooting a device just to see if you could do it, but how does it help you with apps?
just curious.
Anyway, other than voiding your warranty and possibly bricking the device, I say go for it.

If you want one now, now, now, I honestly think the Nook is a better bet. I have a Nook Tablet, I've read a couple books on it so far, so haven't felt the need to root the beast. I did try to dual boot it off the SD, but the Tablet requires a signed SD by default. On that note, the Nook Color can be booted from an SD out of the gate. They're cheaper than the tablet and still beat the crap out of the Kindle Fire. I'd probably opt for a Nook Color if I was looking to mess around without a huge investment.
If you don't have your heart set on a tablet, you could probably get a rooted phone second hand for a song...

customer: "your going to fix your crappy hardware design with a software update?"
Amazon: "Yup"
customer: "Never Mind, where's the Apple store?"
This makes me glad I shelled out th extra cash for the Ipad.

I rode the tablet hype and got a rooted Nook Color. The only time I have used it is when I go to England to visit the family, so I don't have to cart around my heavy laptop. Plus, it's easy to charge 'cos I can just use a family member's usb port rather than fiddling with a plug converter. From my experience, I'd much rather get a smaller, lighter laptop than a tablet. Though, that might just be me. Maybe I just don't have a good use for a tablet.
