Would this support the claim that "racism is rare"? Of course it wouldn't. It would only support the claim that "it is not necessarily true that a given assertion of racism is true".

In your case, I'm not sure anything will do any good. If you live in this world and you think that sexism and racism are rare, you're simply not paying attention, at best.

You are right. Racism is alive and well, and it's living in your posts....

Just sayin... No one else seems to be running the word around like you are bro....

Enough about this sexism towards woman, it will never go away. A man is a man, certain man were trained from society that it is wrong to talk to a woman a certain way, others don't care. If a guy says something wrong, stand up to him - kick him in the balls and I bet he won't do it again.

What about the men? I have seen MANY woman over the years that treat men like crap, but you don't hear about it. Woman are the same.

Whoa, grats on giving me a spit take there. Again, if you don't believe to the group, you can't really claim knowledge of their point of you. Since I've yet to know a black person who would entertain that thought, I'm guessing you ain't black either.

Yes and no. As long as humans come in male and female, you're going to have an innate us and them scenario. Some people get over it. Some never really do and we call them sexist. Sexists, naturally, come in both genders.

People are all pretty much the same and we all want to be special. Some people enjoy feeling special by making out that some group other than them is not so special. It's petty, it's human, and it's not going away. There will always be assholes. The best you can do is to try not to be one.

Been there, done that. Found myself lying bloodied at the bottom of a flight of stairs with the guy who "won't do it again" kicking me in the stomach.

Granted, that was a personal relationship, not anything to do with the female status in the IT realm, but apparently Gunner finds them to be one and the same.

The "a man is a man" mentality causes problems. He raped her? Well, she shouldn't have been showing cleavage! A man is a man, afterall! He beat the shit out of her? Why? Did she burn his dinner? Har-har! Well, a man is a man. He molested his 3-year-old daughter? Well, everyone knows his wife doesn't put out.. gotta take it where he can get it because a man is a man and his needs have to be met one way or another!

This works conversely as well: You had to file for bankruptcy because she maxed out all the credit cards buying shoes? Ah, well... a woman will be a woman! She lied about taking her birth control and got herself knocked up to trap you in the relationship? A woman will be a woman, you know! She hacked your dick off with a butcher knife while you slept because she found out you were sleeping around? That sucks, man, but you know how crazy women are! A woman will be a woman!

Being a woman is no excuse for acting inappropriately just as being a man isn't an excuse. Drag your knuckles much?

Sorry, but I don't disrespect anybody man or woman, my parents taught me better.

Now, if I see a woman wearing a low cut shirt, I don't go and rape here, I say to myself "WOW shes got a NICE RACK" or nice ass and even beautiful eyes, but I keep that to myself (well I do tell them they have beautiful eyes). Some men/woman are asses, that I believe has to do with how they were raised, crap that happened to them growing up, and a low self esteem which they feel they have to treat others like crap to feel better, they are bullies plain an simple.

Here's my problem with some of the sexism shit and I'll give two different examples:

There was a case where this guy filed for divorce and his wife got pissed (for whatever reason) and chopped off the dude's penis. It was a popular news story and television talk shows were covering it, and most of the time the reaction was laughter. If the tables were reversed and it had been a man who had cut off a woman's breasts nobody would be laughing. If anyone went on television and laughed about how some woman got her boobs got cut off I'm sure people would be calling for their heads. cite

There was a case where a man in Russia broke into this woman's hair salon and the woman caught him and tied him up. She proceeded to feed him Viagra and raped him for several days. Again, people went onto public mediums and laughed about how funny it was this dude was raped and tortured for days. If the tables were turned and it had been a woman that a man caught and he raped her for several days, nobody would be laughing. Again, if anyone went onto a public medium and laughed about it people would be calling for their heads. cite

I know you weren't being entirely serious but:

Quote

If a guy says something wrong, stand up to him - kick him in the balls and I bet he won't do it again.

This statement seems pretty funny to most people but if someone had said "if a woman says something wrong, stand up to her - slap her across the face and i bet she won't do it again." Most people wouldn't think that was very funny.

In most cases of sexism I'm fairly certain it's men discriminating against women, but these cases go to show that, at a societal level, we accept certain situations based on gender alone. In all of these cases if you reverse the gender roles it would seem despicable but as they are told for some reason people think they are hilarious.

It really just depends on who you are talking to and what perspective they have. If you ask a bunch of men who work in a male dominated profession whether or not they feel sexism is present, they will probably tell you no. If you go ask the women who work in that same profession then of course they are going to tell you a different story. The same thing is true of men working in female dominated professions (nursing, teaching, etc.) and if you ask men working in those professions if they have ever encountered sexism they will probably have a few stories to tell you. Or go ask a man who has recently been through divorce court and see if he feels like he's been discriminated against because he has a penis.

Sexism isn't something strictly perpetrated by males or females, it comes from both sides and its partially human nature. It's a human weakness and we are slowly removing it and other flavors of discrimination.

I'd love to further comment in agreement with dorknexus, but I'm a little cocked right now to be eloquent on any level.

The best I can say is it's exactly how I see it. Yes, sexism, discrimination, prejudice, etc all exist in this day and age. From every direction. It's a long standing human trait, it's a long standing animal trait, and it is going to take a long time to completely rid ourselves of it.

Raising awareness is important though, and it shouldn't be ignored lest we return back to the darker sides of it. But the boundaries of the examples need to be broaden, just as dorknexus exemplified.

The big ones though are the most talked about, because they are the most often occurring, and portray the victim in a lower class form. Women, Blacks, Jews, etc have been on the lower class receiving end of prejudicial social structures, so the stink of it is easy to recognize and to back up with long history. It's also fun to watch the man on top tumble, we as humans love to watch the top fall over. So when the upper classes get their "just dessert" and have their dick cut off, or raped on viagra, you want to laugh. But we need to fight those desires because it's that very prejudicial view we're trying to combat.
