*sigh* Gettin' a rittle rone-ry...

Posted 18 December 2011 - 08:56 PM

The enigmatic leader of the isolated communist nation has died at 69, according to state TV.

So pardon me for being a stupid American, but how does their government operate for a backup-leader? How does North Korea determine who leads now?

That I don't know. In a democracy, you vote for a leader and hold an election. North Korea, I don't think they have those systems there. Hmm... I think to myself, why not Google it?

To answer the question about the backup ruller. He apparently named his third son as successor.

Quote

The news came as North Korea prepared for a hereditary succession. Kim Jong Il inherited power after his father, revered North Korean founder Kim Il Sung, died in 1994. In September 2010, Kim Jong Il unveiled his third son, the twenty-something Kim Jong Un, as his successor, putting him in high-ranking posts.

Apparently North Korea legend has the dude as near god like. This is how they describe his birth:

Quote

North Korean legend has it that Kim was born on Mount Paekdu, one of Korea’s most cherished sites, in 1942, a birth heralded in the heavens by a pair of rainbows and a brilliant new star.

In reality he was born in Siberia

Quote

Soviet records, however, indicate he was born in Siberia, in 1941.

At least he knew how to live

Quote

The communist country’s “Dear Leader” — reputed to have had a taste for cigars, cognac and gourmet cuisine

It's pretty simple - the plan's been announced for some years - his son, Kim Jong-un, takes over. Yeah.. that's right - he's twenty and now runs a country. What were you doing when you turned twenty?

Quote

Can they bring it off again? The difference is that Kim Jong-un, though swiftly named as Great Successor, is a callow 20-something of no known experience or confirmed opinions.

Kim Il-sung groomed Kim Jong-il as successor for 30 years. Kim Jong-un, by contrast, has had two years at most to prepare for the ruling role he is now suddenly plunged into.

He inherits a poisoned chalice. This untried youth must now run a country both at odds with most of the world and oppressive of its long-suffering people - who may not obey forever, despite the remarkable scenes of publicly orchestrated grief which we are now witnessing.
cite

One of the kiddos screwed up and that's all Walt's fault.

Quote

His eldest son, Kim Jong Nam, 38, is believed to have fallen out of favor with his father after he was caught trying to enter Japan on a fake passport in 2001 saying he wanted to visit Disney's Tokyo resort.
