Virtual private server.

In short: it's a server in a private virtual machine, allowing you to use it as if it were just a normal dedicated server, even though it is in fact sharing hardware with other virtual hosts. It just isolates your applications from what others sharing the same server are doing, in a way the old fashion shared hosting environments couldn't provide (try as they might).
