Where to Start - Computer Science

Posted 30 December 2011 - 12:10 PM

Hey guys I started off using computers for basic things. From there I started with graphics and on to web development. I wish to dive deeper and get into programming. I have a pretty good understanding of computers but there are many things I don't understand in all categories and my questions is this.

I'd like some suggestions of how I should go about learning more of computers and how they work before I jump into programming as I realize I'm to far over my head.

What my plan is start with hardware and go from there just didn't know if you guys could make a small list of which order I should go about learning this stuff. It seems like a weird question but I just don't know what to really research after that.. maybe how processors or something works?

Thanks.

Off hand I would recommend cracking the case of your tower open, take a picture, and examine all the major players on the system you use, but you are aligned with Apple so that's not a practical suggestion. ;)

I guess start reading up on hardware 101.

Do you read reviews of new hardware coming out? I would suggest paying attention to things that come out and investigate the details. What is a core? What why should I care about DDR3? Do I get wontons with my order from PCI Express?

buuuuuuuuuut that's a far cry from encompassing "computer science". There's crazy amount of theory in it... not to mention understanding why computers do everything in binary... how to add binary.. the tcpip stack... yada.. yada.. yada.

Check out this thread. Code is best introductory text to the essence of computing that I've seen.

Ok I appreciate the help.. I Get the basics of the syntax of a language and everything but need to know exactly what is going on. I started reading up on software how it works and how an OS system works but there were things that I didn't know what it was so needed to start even further back. I'll look into hardware for now and go from there. And modi I have a dell 8400 sitting around so I'll crack that open and try to learn everything in it. Also when you asked if I keep up on tech reviews.. is there a site that you recommend that keeps up on new technology?
