crushed ATA pin on HDD

Posted 30 December 2011 - 06:34 PM

So I bought a new internal HDD for super cheap. I mounted it in my case, went to connect the HD with my ATA(IDE Ultra ATA100 / ATA-6) cable but it wouldn't seem to fit. I took a look at the female end(on my cable) and realized I hadn't paid attention to where the missing pin was. I crushed the pin below the missing pin; I seem to have pushed it straight down. I thought It might still be useable so I booted my computer with a linux distro(I was going to install it along with GRUB so the disk was in my computer before I added the HDD, normally i wouldn't be using linux) but GParted doesn't seem to see it. Also, if it is of any importance, it's powered my a molex connector.

Is there any way to save it or should I just replace it?

Is This A Good Question/Topic? 0

Yes... you need all the pins to make a connection a board can see (and subsequently an OS). You can try and bend it back, but if it's a new drive I would suggest replacing it to minimize that pin breaking off in the future when all your valuable pr0nz are backed up on it.

I tried pulling it back into position and the pin fell out :/ looks like I'm getting a new drive.

I can fix it. I'll just replace the connector on the drives controller with one from one of those junk drives that we have at the shop.

It would only take me 5 min to solder on the replacement.

PM me if you want to have it fixed. No sense in throwing out a good drive for just a broken pin.

Just an FYI, that's called the dummy pin.
