I could be tempted by this but I need a more defined shake down: platform, languages, skill sets, milestones & goals, time commitment, general locations, and such.

So far seems like the breakdown will be this...

Language: C# or C++
Graphics: Open GL
Communication : realtime (mIRC), offline (DIC messages)
Time commitment: 5-10Hrs per week
Short-term goals: Learn basics of language we're using
make a calculator
solve some math problems like (find the number of multiples of 3 and 5 from 1-1000)
get graphics and audio into a program
recreate a pong game
Long-term goals: Make a platform clone
Create a tetris clone
Endtime goal:Create a simple 2d rpg game

If you need more information modi123 let us know. We're thrilled that your considering this and we're asking for a mentor only for problems we run into that really don't get solved by guides or seem unclear from the skill sets we're learned.

I may join depending on the project. What do you have in mind for a genre of game. Also what languages do you plan to use, C++?, Direct X libraries?, Also do you have Tortoise SVN or a FTP site to keep code in sync? All of these things are important when it comes to group projects. :detective:

I can do either C++ or C#, never used Open GL would be nice to learn how to cross platform projects. This is a great idea as long as you already have the knowledge in all of these area's. I am also willing to share what I have learned so far

I don't currently have the knowledge on how work with OpenGL. I have only coded simple programs with C++. We will be searching for guides as a group and probably studying the guides and using the knowledge from them to learn the skills we don't have as of yet. Your more than welcome to join. By Jan 13th I will have an mIRC channel ready (I'm forced to be on a mac right now and not a fan of them. I'll have my PC back on the 12th) for communication and when we get everyone set up we'll discuss how to achieve each goal, what guides we will use, what IDE and so on. I'll add you to the project list.

Well I am sure someone knows OpenGL, if not I know Direct X...

Also another great program to use would be Team-viewer I use this a lot when helping people at school. Turn line numbers on....
Btw I only help people willing to code. I will not do your work for you. You have to really want this.

Well if anything this has pushed me to update one of my old docs on development. It was a collection of resources and an outline to get some bearings.

http://wangnet.org/GroupDev.html

I would suggest getting some of the ground rules out - roles, who is going to be the PM, what signs are key to pulling the plug, time commitment, where you want to go with this, where do you want to store the files, etc. Then after some discussion then start the game. The major cause of these projects going to pot is with no fore-planning people became discouraged at the size of the activity space... as well as felt there was no forward movement because there were no milestones.

I am getting the feeling that you want the mentor to act like a teacher - dole out assignments, grade them, etc.

Yeah - that's not going to really fly with me. Think of this as more of a self study - where you cast off the oppressive yoke of a grading system and wade deep into the big boy pool of self confidence and group work! I would prefer someone in the group to step up and take a project manager role of sorts if I would pop in time to time (or be available) to make sure everything is going fine..

To me the mentor is someone to who can gather the files, organise the file structure (?), mediate meetings ect. (s)He is a ressource for the team to help find solutions to problems and other ressources. Get everything together when the projects are do.

IRC wise we can use greenies or something for the server.

I would really like to make OpenGL work because I like to switch between linux and Windows.

File wise we could use github or dropbox

we now have a wiki set up for information on the project and for ideas. The outline for the rules and expectations is there too. All members need to sign up for the wiki and give me your user names

Alright here's a list of things to do before Jan 12th guys.

  • Create wiki site (done)
  • Come up with Console Application Problems and post on the wiki
  • Signup for WikiSpaces project ProjectL2C
  • Create an IRC channel on whatever server you like. I will be using mIRC as a client
  • Find Guides on C++ and SDL that will help with Tic Tac Toe project and Pong Project
  • Find a place to host community files for our code. Suggestion has been code.google.com. Waleed, can you set that up and get us added

You can use whatever IDE you want to write and compile code for c++. If you don't know what to use then I suggest either Code::Blocks or Dev-C++.

I'll be trying to work on the mIRC channel today and I'll make a small guide on where to signup and join the channel. Finally got my PC back. No more mac for me

The purpose of this team is to learn off each

Beginners learning from beginners.

You'll have some hopefuls apply, everyone will say "how neat!" & that's about as far as it will go.

On the previously mentioned (& unlinked) wiki. Or the mIRC channel.

Can irssi join mIRC channels?
