Constructive critisim please

Posted 09 April 2007 - 10:15 AM

Hi, just joined and really pleased I found this forum!

I have just finished constructing my first site that is not university work so would like some suggestions for improvements.

The site uses a number of technologies, some of which are not necessary but I felt I should use for educational purposes.
The site uses AJAX and I need to get bookmarks and a back button working but not really sure how.
Other languages include:
- HTML
- CSS (only 1 set of tables used to remove 1px gap between images in IE)
- Javascript
- PHP (no SQL as haven't paid for database)
- Flash (which I first used a week ago so might not be that great!)

Let me know what you think.

Many thanks
Ed

Bit embarrassing for my first post - forgetting to tell you what the website is!!
www.things4free.info - There you go.

actually running out the door so i will just say a few things and probably come back later and qualify everything.

not a big fan of the orange on red color scheme,
the font for the flash is real dated
and you need more content,
the 1st page is really short , even with the massive font in the flash file...

notice the product page looks better than the others because of a little more text formatting and a few images, if there was more of that it might help out.

alright im out.

You've got a typo on your 'about' page...you mispelled 'experience'.

Thanks for that - that was quite helpful. Fixed the spelling mistake, so thanks and as for the colour scheme (or for the Americans, which is probably most of you -color), I think I agree with you. It is not a great match but at the time I thought it was. I probably won't change that for a while though cos I don't think it looks horrible, just not great.

I added one more line to the first page but not sure what else to add without going into too much detail about the scheme, which is already covered on the 'how' page, but will think about it.

Right now I am trying to embed some more flash and could do with some help. I have posted my question on this thread but I don't think many people are seeing it as it is pinned so I would appreciate some input:

Thanks a lot,
Ed

Oh, any anymore comments about the site?

agree with the font issue, not liking the red either. The theme seems a little obnoxious - and the border graphics are too big so it gets in your face, distracts from the bit of content you have in there. Instead of red i'd go brown or some more complimentary color if you have to have the bright bg.
